William and Mary, 1898. After various experiences as a journalist and a coal miner he began writing fiction. His early works, which are sophisticated novels deriding conventional history, include Gallantry Chivalry (1909), and The Rivet in Grandfather's Neck (1915). Many of Cabell's most popular novels are set in the imaginary medieval kingdom of Poictesme; among these are The Cream of the Jest Jurgen The Silver Stallion (1926). Cabell's novels are usually pointedly anti-realistic, and many of them can be considered moral allegories. Although he was enormously popular in the 1920s, his highly artifical prose style and subject matter lost favor with critics and public alike by the 1930s. His nonfictional writing includes

When I was an undergraduate here, I must confess, I didn't take advantage of Special Collections. Later, while I was studying and working at that rival institution across the Bay, I made considerable use of Stanford Special Collections but did not fully appreciate their variety, breadth, and depth. Now I'm pleased to have the opportunity to appreciate Stanford Special Collections first-hand, to help build them, and, in the process, to help more of Stanford's students and faculty to make good use of these holdings. You may have read of plans for rebuilding the West Wing of Green Library, with more seminar rooms and a newly designed Special Collections Reading Room all in library surroundings more hospitable than they were 20+ years ago, when I was fairly sure to find splendid solitude (and dust) in the old stacks. But we don't want to wait until the opening of the West Wing to encourage your use of our materials for your research and your classes. Our riches include rare books new and old, fragile newspapers, medieval manuscripts, photographs, more modern manuscripts, archives, and ephemera, sources that both anchor and enrich research and teaching. This newsletter is designed to call your attention to both new and notable acquisitions and to suggest their use and their fit with other Special Collections holdings.

Biographical Sketch
Isidore Rosenbaum Brussel was born in Minsk, Russia, in 1897 (according to the Old Russian calendar),* and later moved to Brooklyn, New York, with his family. Brussel attended Brooklyn Polytechnic and worked for three years as a civil engineer before becoming a self styled "book scout," specializing in nineteenth-century English and American literature. Known to his customers simply as "Ike," his lively imagination, infinite persistence, and his wide acquaintance in the book trade, both in his own country and in England, established him as the scout of choice for such discriminating collectors as Oliver Brett (Lord Esher), Morris Parish, Michael Sadleir, and Carroll Wilson, and for many other dealers from London to New York. He earned the bulk of his living by finding stock on all subjects for public, school, and research libraries. Brussel contributed two volumes to Sadleir's Bibliographica series: ANGLO-AMERICAN FIRST EDITIONS, 1826-1900, EAST TO WEST (1935), and its counterpart WEST TO EAST, (1936) which described and analyzed English editions of books by American authors. Brussel died on March 16, 1972, in Brooklyn, at the age of 74.
