    Unit 3: Ancient Rome
/ Republic to Empire Tiberius Gracchus Defies the Senate, 133 B.C. The Senate dominated Roman politics under the republican system. Competition among elites was channeled into political and military achievement, and respect for tradition kept dissent muted. This all changed, in the conventional Roman view, in 133 B.C., when a young aristocrat stepped out of the normal methods of advancement and challenged the Senate itself. That man was Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus (163-133 B.C.), whose father was an ex-consul and mother was the daughter of Scipio Africanus. His career was almost ruined when he had the misfortune to be part of an army defeated through no fault of his own, but he found a way back in: he would become a tribune of the people and take on the vexing issue of land reform. His pursuit of this issue brought him into conflict with the leaders of the Senate, made him a hero to the common people, and eventually led to his death. His younger brother Gaius followed in his footsteps and was killed by his enemies in 121 B.C. BTW the saeculum did not die after the Romans! If you check out my work on the Medieval Paradigm and beyond you will see that. The hope and sense of progress of which you speak is very linear. Progress speaks to an onward ans upward accout of human development, the cycle is about starts and stops and things repeating, like crises! DMMcG

Subject: After Oientalization II Message: Tim, the process of the shift from the Greco-Roman to Early Medieval Paradigm is what happened after Or II. The change was a movement from the secular state (i.e. the Prinipate) to theocracy (i.e. the Dominate) and the move from rational to mythopoetic thought. Marcus Aurelius was the last princeps when power was still Constitutional (i.e. Veto and Imperium), his son Commodus and the Sevrans mark a significant change in political thinking that was not just autocratic but also theocratic. I hope that this is not a duplicate e-mail message, we are having technical
    problems here.
I have received a contract with Greenwood Press to edit volume one of the
series Interdisciplinary Biographical Dictionaries entitled The Ancient
World, c. 800 BC-500 AD. This work will be a biographical dictionary of the
greatest cultural figures of the Ancient/Late Antique World. It will differ
from other works of this type in that its focus will be on cultural
figures, rather than political ones. It will consist of around 450 individual entries ranging from 200-1250 words (the more important the individual, the longer the entry). The target audience is high school students and undergraduates and the anticipated date of publication is spring 2000.

Republican Rome (509-31 BC) After the expulsion of the Tarquins (Etruscan king) Rome became a republic (really an oligarchy). “In the opening phase of republican history, religion governed the people, dictated the law, and legitimized the rule of the patricians who regarded themselves as the preservers of sacred traditions. Gradually the Romans loosened the ties between religion and politics and hammered out a constitutional system that paralleled the Greek achievement of rationalizing and secularizing politics and law. In time the Romans, like the Greeks, came to view law as an expression of the public will and not as the creation of god-kings, priest-kings, or a priestly caste” (Perry 105). I. The Latin League : "At the beginning of the Republic, Rome was surrounded by enemies, including the Etruscans to the north and the Sabines, Volscians, and Aequi to the east and south. The Latin communities on the plain of Latium posed an even more immediate threat. After the expulsion of the Etruscan kings, a league of Latin allies formed to challenge Roman leadership in Latium. But in 493 BC, the Romans established an alliance with the Latin communities, which provided for a common defense of Latium.
