Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Historical and Celebrity Figures There are several good questions worth asking about a list such as this. Among them are: 1. Are these listings "proven" or accurate? Are the sources reliable? 2. Are these people really gay/lesbian/bisexual? 3. Why so many men and so few women? 4. What is the point of such a list anyway? There are many reasonable answers to each question, but here are mine: 1. These sources aren't particularly reliable. None are. Authorities that range from thorough professional biographies to rumours disagree on just who is/was or isn't/wasn't, and have about the same track record for accuracy. There is also a substantial cross-pollination between list-makers. An erroneous listing will show up again and again on other sources. 2. Perhaps the acid test is: "Which of them would have self-identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual?" The answer is "few." Different cultures and different times would have made the admission impossible for some, and ridiculous for others. Often the evidence surrounding a medieval figure is a single remark or a curious juxtaposition of events or persons. Hardly conclusive evidence. 3. The gender balance of the list reflects at least two factors. One is the gender of the compiler and the kinds of sources used. Second is the place of women in most societies and times, where celebrity or positions of historical noteworthness were difficult or impossible to achieve.

Julius Caesar Sammy Lyon See my poster. Julius Caesar is considered one of the most important rulers in the history of the world. He lived from 100-44 B.C. He became an intelligent and brilliant military leader, and made Rome the capital of an empire that stretched out far throughout Europe. He was famous for being a politician and a writer, as well as, of course, the skillful ruler of Rome from 49-44 B.C. Early Life Julius Caesar was born in Rome. He has been said to have been born by a caesarean section, which is part of the reason why it is called a caesarean. (A caesarean is when the baby won't come out right, so the doctor cuts the woman open, reaches into her womb, and pulls the baby out from there.) When he was 17, he married Cornelia, who was the daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna. Lucius led the Marian Group , which were the followers of the popular leader, Gaius Marius. Lucius ordered Caesar to divorce Cornelia, but he refused to do so. He went to Greece to study philosophy, and later, Lucius pardoned him, so Caesar returned to Rome. Cornelia had a daughter (of which Julius was the father) named Julia. Cornelia died in 68 B.C. though. His Power A Plot to Kill Caesar had now become the unquestioned ruler of Rome. He forgave Pompey's followers, people honored him for his powerful leadership by granting him dictatorship for 10 years, which later became for life. One day, at a public festival, he was offered the crown as king of Rome. But because the Romans had thrown out a king (for good) about 500 years ago, and because the Romans hated kings, he refused the crown. Even though Caesar refused the power to be king, his fellow "friends" and senators suspected that he would make himself king one day. Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius (two of which Julius had forgiven) led a plot to kill Julius Caesar. So, on the fateful morning of March 15, 44 B.C., his former friends cornered him in the Senate House and stabbed him to death. It has been said that his last words were, "You too Brutus," from the play Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare. He was left dead with 23 stabs. . . . . .at the foot of Pompey's statue.
