Marthy Burk, aka Calamity Jane (1852-1903)
Bibliographic Notes: First published in c1900.
My maiden name was Marthy Cannary. I was born in Princeton, Missourri, May 1 st , 1852. Father and mother were natives of Ohio. I had two brothers and three sisters, I being the oldest of the children. As a child I always had a fondness for adventure and out-door exercise and especial fondness for horses which I began to ride at an early age and continued to do so until I became an expert rider being able to ride the most vicious and stubborn of horses, in fact the greater portion of my life in early times was spent in this manner. Mother died at Black Foot, Montana, 1866, where we buried her. I left Montana in Spring of 1866, for Utah, arriving at Salt Lake city during the summer. Remained in Utah until 1867, where my father died, then went to Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, where we arrived May 1, 1868, then went to Piedmont, Wyoming, with UP Railway. Joined General Custer as a scout at Fort Russell, Wyoming, in 1870, and started for Arizona for the Indian Campaign. Up to this time I had always worn the costume of my sex. When I joined Custer I donned the uniform of a soldier. It was a bit awkward at first but I soon got to be perfectly at home in men's clothes. Was in Arizona up to the winter of 1871 and during that time I had a great many adventures with the Indians, for as a scout I had a great many dangerous missions to perform and while I was in many close places always succeeded in getting away safely for by this time I was considered the most reckless and daring rider and one of the best shots in the western country.

Calamity Jane, berømt western legende. Martha Jane Canary Burke. Frontiers-women (1852-1903).

Good Short Reading
This is a selection of what I think is some of the best short fiction, non-fiction and poetry from authors of years long past: Ambrose B IERCE Killed At Resaca [c1891] (2400 words) is an uncollected short story. Marthy B URK C ANNARY aka Calamity Jane (1852-1903) : Her autobiographical pamphlet The Life and Adventures of Calamity Jane [c1900] (2000 words) is worth reading. By the time the frontier closed in 1892, Calamity Jane (1852-1903) had become a legend in her own time, the heroine of pulp fiction and the star of the Wild West shows. Hear her amazing story in her own words: how she learned to shoot and ride, the daughter she gave up for adoption, and her reaction to the many myths spun around her name. Joyce Thierer

    Name:
      Anne Bonney (1697-unknown)
    Occupation:
      Pirate, on the Adventure
    Life and Times:
Anne Bonney was born to John Cormac and Mary Brennen. Mary was John's serving girl. When Joh's wife discovered teh affair, she had him tossed into jail. When John made got out of the pen, he took Mary Brennen, and they moved to New Providence, and were married. It was in New Providence, that she met James Bonney. He was a failing pirate. They married, and he returned to a life of piracy, leaving Anne in New Providence. Anne was not pleased with this arrangment. Eventually, she took up with Calico Jack Rackham, another pirate captain. James was not pelased when he learned of his wife's affair, and he convinced the governor to condemn the relationship, even though Calico Jack offered to purchase Anne. Anne disguised herself as a man, and left New Providence with Calico Jack, to his pirate ship. While on the Calico Jack's ship, Anne met fellow pirate Mary Read. (Also dressed as a man.) They three of them were all very successful pirates for almost a year (with the only pause in pirating being a stop in Cuba, for Anne to give birth). However, it was destined to come to an end. After a partcularly successful loot, all of the pirates were drinking. The ship was ambushed by Barnet, one of the King's pirate hunters. The only two to resist arrest were Anne and Mary. They even tried firing on their own crew to force them to resist arrest. Anne was arrested, and conviced for piracy on November 28, 1720. But, because she was pregnant, she couldn't be hanged. Anne got a reprieve after a short time in prison, for unknown reasons. She then basically disappeared off of the pages of history.

Calamity Jane c.1852-1903, American frontier character, b. Princeton, Mo. Her real name was Martha Jane Canary, and the origin of her nickname is obscure. Little is known of her early life beyond the fact that she moved with her parents to Virginia City, Mont., in 1865 and that she grew up in mining camps and rough frontier communities. In 1876 she appeared in Deadwood, S.Dak., dressed in men's clothes and boasting of her marksmanship and her exploits as a pony-express rider and as a scout with Custer's forces. In her later years she toured the West in a burlesque show and appeared at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, N.Y. She died in poverty and obscurity in Deadwood, where she is buried beside Wild Bill Hickock. See biographies by Duncan Aikman (1927) and Mrs. Glenn Clairmonte (1959); R. J. Background Information on the Calamity Jane Horse Cache The Calamity Jane Horse Cache consists of 2139 acres of rolling hills , ponderosa pine trees and majestic rim rock cliffs . A portion of the ranch , 254 acres, was once owned by the notorious Martha Jane Canary alias Calamity Jane , 1852-1903. Calamity found this unusual plateau west of Billings, Montana to be a perfect, temporary, holding place for horses (a cache). The plateau, which bears her name today, rises 100 meters from the valley floor and is completely skirted by rim rock cliffs. This naturally fenced plateau provided Calamity an easy place to cache horses. She found or created a secret passage to the top and would bring horses down to water from Canyon Creek which flows around the north base of the Horse Cache. Click on view to see a topographical map of the Calamity Jane Horse Cache. The Battle of Canyon Creek between the Nez Pierce Indians and the U.S. Cavalry took place at the foot of the Calamity Jane Horse Cache plateau.
