"...Who from the western Lusitanian shore
On seas never before navigated
Passing even beyond Taprobane..." These verses, which should sound familiar to "Star Track" fans, are as a matter of fact part of "The Lusiads" which describes on both historical and mythological levels the discovery of the sea route to India by Vasco da Gama in 1498. Luis de Camões, the greatest figure in Portuguese literature, wrote this epic poem, which
Banished from the court, possibly because a flirtation with a woman of high rank, he was sent as a young soldier to Morocco, where he eventually lost an eye. When he returned to Lisbon, he was jailed for wounding a nobleman in a street fight and was released the next year after consenting to serve in India. For the next several years, he experienced alternate poverty and relative material comfort. From India he was sent to Macau where he was given an official post. By then, he was already writing "The Lusiads." Charges of misadministration were brought against him, and he lost his position and was put on board a ship to Goa (India), which wrecked at sea. Traveling with him was his beloved Chinese mistress Dinamene. Legend tells that he let her sink with the ship, but managed to save "TheLusiads"manuscript. He spent the rest of his life writing lyrical sonnets to her, sonnets which today’s critics consider some of the loveliest ever written. These lyrics alone are sufficient in substantiating Camões as an authentic bard. When he was abroad, in addition to Dinamene, he had another affair with a

Dear Gentle Soul
Dear gentle soul, who went so soon away
Departing from this life in discontent,
Repose in that far sky to which you went
While on this earth I linger in dismay.
In the ethereal seat where you must be,
If you consent to memories of our sphere,
Recall the love which, burning pure and clear,
So often in my eyes you used to see!
If then, in the incurable, long anguish Of having lost you, as I pine and languish, You see some merit - do this favour for me: And to the God who cut your life short, pray That he as early to your sight restore me As from my own he swept you far away. ~Luis Vaz de Camoes, [1524-1580, Portugal] In Our Hearts We thought of you with love today, But that is nothing new. We thought about you yesterday, And the days before that, too. We think of you in silence. We often speak your name. Now all we have is memories, And your picture in a frame. Your memory is our keepsake, With which we'll never part. God has you in His Keeping. We have you in our Heart.

A passage to Portugal
opines Mohinder Singh O F all the foreign powers coming to India in the last five centuries, the Portuguese were the first to arrive and the last to leave. Despite these long links, few Indian tourists are visiting Portugal. Down the Tagus is the famous Belem Tower, built to commemorate the spot from where explorers set sail on their voyages. Across the tower, is Jeronimos monastery, an architectural achievement. It was built in the 16th century to honour the discoveries of great explorers such as Vasco da Gama, who is buried here. Nearby is the modern Monument of Discovery. Portugal is celebrating the fifth centenary of its maritime expeditions. It all started with Prince Henry, the Navigator, promoting ocean exploration in the 15th century. A new kind of ship, called Caravel, was designed. First it was Madeira, then Azores, then down the African coast till Dias rounded the Cape of Good Hope. Later Vasco da Gama reached Mozambique. There he took a native of India as a pilot who directed the fleet to Goa. Other Portuguese explorers sailed to Ceylon, Macao, and eventually Japan. Meanwhile, Cabral by chance discovered Brazil. Guide to Fantasy Authors and Tales
compiled by George Jelliss
This first section of the Guide tries to cover everything from the earliest records, including archaeological evidence, to beyond the invention of printing, after which the first printed syntheses of the oral and hand-written traditions, were compiled. It seems appropriate that we conclude with the retellings of folk and fairy tales by Charles Perrault and Madame D'Aulnoy in the 1690s. The treatment of the myths and legends is from the point of view of a modern secular reader interested in tracing themes of imaginative fiction back to their sources, or seeking new inspiration from old stories. Many modern writers (Dunsany, Lovecraft, Tolkein come to mind) have tried to create extensive new myths to provide motivation for their fantasies. It is of course possible to find many similarities and correspondences between myths and legends from different regions. For example stories of creation designed to explain how and why the world came to be the way it is. Parables to guide the morality of human behaviour and explore taboos. Attitudes to death, with ideas of ghosts, spirits and lands of the dead. Legends of survival of past disasters such as great floods, famines, plagues and wars. But there are also notable differences to be seen. I feel that attempts to achieve a unified viewpoint, amalgamating all myths into one scheme, as for instance exact matchings between diverse pantheons of gods, have often been taken too far; perhaps the differences and incompatibilities are of more interest. Certainly many attitudes to life and the world exhibited in folklore are difficult for modern minds to comprehend. As has been often said, the past is in many ways a foreign place.

Onde sentado chorei E quanto nela passei. Ali, o rio corrente De meus olhos foi manado;
