Monumento a Tommaso Campanella Monumento a Tommaso Campanella Nel centro della piccola piazza antistante l'antica chiesa di San Francesco, il monumento a Tommaso Campanella si presenta imponente e serio come serio fu colui che nacque “per debellare tre mali estremi: tirranide, sofismi e ipocrisia". Il monumento di Ermete Gazzeri fu fatto costruire nel 1926 per volontà di Luigi Carnovale che dall'America, con filiale devozione, volle dedicare. Campanella è ricordato nella regione ed in tutta Italia per la sua celebre ribellione come apostolo anticonformista. Ribellione che gli causò la prigione in carceri governativi per un lunghissimo periodo di tempo (27 anni).Nato nel lontano 1568. In pieno dominio spagnolo, trascorse la sua vita in diversi posti e morì poi a Parigi nel 1639. Il monumento a lui dedicato lo raffigura seduto con il braccio poggiato sulla gamba che regge il mento mentre la stessa gamba inginocchiata è posta su due grossi volumi. La statua in bronzo fuso è collocata su un appropriato basamento in marmo. Gli Stilesi sono orgogliosi di attribuire la paternità all'illustre personaggio. anche se ciò ha formato oggetto di controversia con altri comuni, come Stignano, ove un altro busto a Tommaso Campanella figura posto dai concittadini. Il decreto del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione Caleffi del 16.5.68, faceva presente che un fabbricato sito in comune di Stignano è da considerare di interesse storico "perchè casa natale del filosofo Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639), come si è potuto desumere da notizie dell'archivio provinciale di Napoli".

En 1628, il est définitivement libéré et, protégé par le Pape Urbain VIII, il est nommé maître en théologie. En 1634, craignant une nouvelle arrestation à cause du complot d’un de ses élèves contre le roi de Naples, Campanella s’exile à Paris et devient le conseiller de Richelieu. Tommaso Campanella (1568/1639). "Así España descubrió el Nuevo Mundo para que todas las naciones estuvieran sometidas a una sola ley." Giovanni Domenico Campanella nació el 5 de septiembre de 1568 en Stilo (Calabria). En 1582 ingresó como fray Tommaso en el convento de Santo Domingo de Placanica. Estudió teología y filosofía en Morgeto y Nicastro, demostrando admiración por la física naturalista y el antiaristotelismo de Telesio. En 1589 fue, junto con un rabino israelita y sin conocimiento de sus superiores, a Nápoles, donde se introdujo en la magia y el naturalismo de Gian Battista Porta. En 1591 publicó su primera obra Philosophia sensibus demonstrata en defensa de Telesio, siendo procesado por la Orden dominicana al año siguiente acusado de demonismo y herejía. Además de éste sufrió otros procesos en Roma, Florencia, Bolonia y Padua, hasta que es trasladado de nuevo a Roma, donde fue encerrado por el Santo Oficio en la Torre Nona. Tras obtener su libertad se retira a Stilo aparentando llevar una vida apacible. Durante su estancia en el convento de Santa María de Gesú planeó una conjuración contra la dominación española de Calabria para instaurar una república teocrática perfecta, pero fue delatado en 1599, sometiéndose a un proceso político y eclesiástico acusado de rebelión y herejía. En 1602 las autoridades española y eclesiástica le condenaron a cadena perpetua en el Castillo de Nápoles. Estuvo recluido durante veintisiete años, tiempo aprovechado para escribir sus principales obras, pudiendo recomponer las que la
