Brandeis, Louis D.
Autograph Letter Signed ("
Brandeis writes: " ...We will immediately consult Mr. Emery and our other clients concerning Mr. Hamlin (this is probably Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's Vice President, or his son Charles, both of whom where active lawyers at the time) the R.R. office at Bangor would, we fear, be a very convenient place for Mr. Emery and us. We desire to make an examination of the books before taking any testimony at Bangor...Awaiting your further favor. " A fine example of Brandeis as a young lawyer, which also points out the elevated circles in which that young Boston lawyer practiced as he moved to the top of his profession.

Cardozo, Bejamin
(1870-1938) American jurist and legal essayist, Cardozo served as Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court from 1932-1938. As an appellate judge, particularly during his time with the New York State Court of Appeals (1914-1932), Cardozo helped steer the process to a greater involvement with public policy. As a Supreme Court Justice, Cardozo supported the New Deal policies of President Roosevelt, writing the majority opinion supporting the Social Security Act. One of the most influential jurists and legal scholars of the 20th century.

Notables Part of your acculturation to the legal profession requires that you become familiar with the identity and contributions of notable judges and legal scholars. Following are some brief introductions. Benjamin N. Cardozo (1870-1938) was one of the most acclaimed and influential judges of the twentieth century. After practicing law in New York City, he served as judge and then Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of New York and was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1932, where he served until his death. The Nature of the Judicial Process is a compilation of his classic series of lectures on jurisprudence. You may be interested in seeing his picture and comments about the writing style of his opinions and about his place in American jurisprudence , or a biographical sketch Arthur Linton Corbin (1874-1967) taught Contracts and other subjects at Yale Law School for forty years, from 1903-1943. "Corbin on Contracts" is a classic treatise and his writings there and elsewhere are cited frequently by judges and legal scholars. He contributed as Special Advisor and Reporter for the Chapter on Remedies of the Restatement (First) of Contracts. Learned Hand (1872-1961) was appointed to the District Court for the Southern District of New York in 1909 and to the prestigious United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1924 where he served until 1951.

We are what we believe we are. - Benjamin Cardozo
    Sun in Gemini
We seek to find peace of mind in the word, the formula, the ritual. The hope is illusion.
    Moon in Aries
There is no guarantee of justice . . . except the personality of the judge.
    Mercury in Gemini
There is an accuracy that defeats itself by the overemphasis of details. I often say that one must permit oneself, and quite advisedly and deliberately, a certain margin of misstatement.
    Venus in Aries (VE-0-NE)
Of course I like the applause, but it has been so dreadfully overdone that I can hardly look the knowing ones in the face ... Such a fuss and bother, and see the ordinary creature who stirred it all up! ... It is going to be a fearful wrench for me to pull up stakes. The excitement dulls my sense of it for the moment. Mars in Taurus The heroic hours of life do not announce their presence by drum and trumpet, challenging us to be true to ourselves.... Some little, unassuming, unobtrusive choice presents itself before us slyly and craftily, glib and insinuating, in the modest garb of innocence, to yield to its blandishments is so easy. Jupiter in Gemini Justice, though due to the accused, is due to the accuser too.

    In the Beginning
The origins of Cardozo date back to the 1960s, when the trustees of Yeshiva approved a resolution authorizing the University to take the steps necessary to create a law school. It had long been President Samuel Belkin's dream to transform Yeshiva from a college into a full-fledged university, a process started in earnest with the creation of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1955. The addition of a law school would largely complete his vision. Belkin believed that the University could "make a significant contribution to the field of law, and that a need exists for a law school shaped by tradition, yet able to blend precedent with the complex requirements of modern society, and free to explore all avenues leading to excellence in legal education."
The University's desire for a law school went even deeper. As President Norman Lamm, who succeeded Belkin one month before Cardozo opened, recently noted, "Law is very important to Judaism. The most revered personalities in Jewish history were jurists. And in the Jewish tradition, you cannot have law without spirit, nor can you have spirit without law. Because law without spirit becomes harsh and not very human, and spirit without law becomes anarchic, moody, formless, it is not fixed, it has no structure. So, law gives structure to the metaphysical quest that is fundamental to religion."
