Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish-born British essayist and historian educated at the University of Edinburgh. As a young man he worked as a teacher and schoolmaster (1814-19), studied law and tutored privately (1819-24), but was unsatisfied with the work and turned to writing. In 1834 he moved to London where he established himself as one of the foremost authors and men of letters of his day. German language and literature always held a special place in Carlyle's heart; he published an English translation of Goethe's Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship in 1824. This and other early writings for the London Magazine and the Edinburgh Review were the beginnings of his literary career. Other works included Sartor Resartus The French Revolution On Heroes and Hero-Worship Oliver Cromwell's Letters and Speeches Latter-Day Pamphlets (1850) and History of Friedrich the Second, Called Frederick the Great

(Heroes and Hero Worship, 1841) Carlyle was born in Ecclefechan, Dumfries and Galloway, as the son of a stonemason and small farmer. He was brought up in a strict Calvinist household. At the age of 15 he went to University of Edinburgh, receiving his B.A. in 1813. From 1813 to 1818 he studied for the ministry of the Church of Scotland, but abandoned this course and studied law for a while. Carlyle taught at Annan Academy (1814-16), at Kircaldy Grammar School (1816-18), and privately in Edinburgh (1818-22). During this time he worked at his LIFE OF SCHILLER, which was first published by the London Magazine in 1823-24. He wrote contributions for Brewter's

Thomas Carlyle
Scottish-born English historian and essayist, leading figure in the Victorian era, 1795-1881
A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder. Every new opinion, at its starting, is precisely in a minority of one. If time is precious, no book that will not improve by repeated reading deserves to be read at all. Friendship, in the old heroic sense of that term, no longer exists. It is in reality no longer expected or recognized as a virtue among men. Foolish men imagine that because judgement for an evil thing is delayed, there is no justice; but only accident here below. Judgement for an evil thing is many times delayed some day or two, some century or two, but it is sure as life, it is sure as death. Everywhere in life the true question is, not what we have gained, but what we do. It is the unseen and the spiritual in people that determines the outward and the actual. All men, if they work not as in the great taskmaster's eye, will work wrong, and work unhappily for themselves and for you.

http://w1.408.telia.com/~u40802862/imena/carlyle_thomas.htm
Carlyle Thomas (1795 - 1881)
