People cantare In The Navy CADMUS, Paul USA 1904 - painter -Paul Cadmus's career was made when a retired Navy admiral took offense at his painting "The Fleet's In!" According to the officer, Cadmus's work was "a representation of a disgraceful, sordid, disreputable, drunken brawl with a number of enlisted men consorting with a party of street walkers." Too bad he wasn't around to hear the Village People sing "In the Navy." A short history of The Hall-Carpenter Archives
Written by Oliver Merrington, MIInfSc, September 2001. The Hall-Carpenter Archives (HCA) is named after the authors Marguerite Radclyffe Hall (1880-1943) and Edward Carpenter In 1978 the Gay Research Group of the British Sociological Association discussed the development of gay archives, but it was the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE) which identified the need for a media monitoring service to collect evidence of discrimination and police arrests from all parts of the United Kingdom. So in 1980 it established the (GMAP) as part of its Discrimination Commission. It received agency press cuttings and collected other newspaper clippings sent in by its members. It also had inherited the correspondence and files of various earlier gay rights organisations, and GMAP held meetings in CHE's offices in London. GMAP later became separate from CHE and one its founders, Julian Meldrum , moved all the papers into his tiny flat in London. Its first funding was a grant made to the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) from the Manpower Services Commission, and this allowed Julian to be employed for 12 months to work on the Archives. He actively researched how a professional archive is run, and began to buy PRO (Public Record Office) boxes, brass paper clips and the like. In 1982, with others, he set up a limited company called the

    39. Dartmouth College - Foundation Benefiting Gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender Progr
The foundation was named after Edward Carpenter (18441929), an English poet andsocial reformer who is now considered a pioneer in the field of gay rights.
    http://www.dartmouth.edu/~news/releases/2000/feb00/carpenter.html
Foundation benefiting gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender programs transfers assets to Dartmouth College FEB. 21, 2000 In a ceremony at Dartmouth on Monday, Feb. 21, the Edward Carpenter Memorial Foundation transferred its assets to Dartmouth for the support of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender studies and co-curricular activities at the college. Dartmouth President James Wright received assets of $250,000 on behalf of the college from Peter Saccio, Professor of English and Chairman of the Carpenter Foundation's Board of Trustees. The gift will enhance the already existing Stonewall Fund at Dartmouth, which pays for courses and lectures in gay and lesbian studies. It will also establish the Carpenter Fund, to help support co-curricular and extra-curricular activities carried out by student organizations. The Carpenter Foundation was established in 1985 by a gift from the late Dr. Ralph Elias, Dartmouth College class of 1932, for the enhancement of the lives of gay students at Dartmouth. The foundation was named after Edward Carpenter (1844-1929), an English poet and social reformer who is now considered a pioneer in the field of gay rights. Besides the generous bequest in Dr. Elias' will, the foundation has been enriched by gifts from other Dartmouth alumni; its trustees have been Dartmouth professors and alumni committed to Dr. Elias' concerns. "Thanks to Dr. Elias' generosity, we have broadened and diversified the opportunities for Dartmouth students," said Saccio. "Now, however, we do not require a separate organization to handle these funds. Dartmouth now has policies and programs in place to address some of the primary educational and social needs of its gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender students. The student groups are active, and a course in Gay and Lesbian Studies, first developed as an interdisciplinary course, is now housed in the Women's Studies program. I am happy to celebrate Dartmouth's growth in this regard, and to transfer to the College means to nurture and build upon these programs and policies."
