When release dates of what are considered "A" list titles start looming, development houses tend to rush out whatever "B" (or worse) grade product is on the table, due to the fact that the lower-quality titles will certainly be overshadowed by the phenomenal ones. When the Sega Dreamcast launched in 1999, gamers were forced to deal with the putrid stench of Blue Stinger (and some of us even had to write strategy guides for it... ahem) before we got to the sweet smell of the rotting flesh in Resident Evil - Code: Veronica . With a suped-up version of the latter title and a jaw dropping new foray called Devil May Cry heading to PS2 in the next few months, it was bound to happen. Fans of the survival horror genre have been treated to yet another "B" grade penultimate offering, this time coming in the form of a catchy title called Extermination The game's title brought back memories of the "B" grade Death Wish knockoff film called The Exterminator (1980). Keith David KEITH DAVID has done two films with John Carpenter; The Thing and They Live Othello David continued to perform in regional theatre and made his first Broadway appearance in The Lady From Dubuque . Roles in A Map of the World The Thing was his film debut. Since then, he has achieved distinction for his portrayal of the tough, compassionate ghetto draftee in Platoon and has had roles in Missing in Action, Saigon, Hot Pursuit and in numerous theatrical productions. In addition, David appeared in the television special, Roots: The Next Generation Keith David on They Live The Thing They Live "The ‘working homeless’ issue is very important to us today," emphasizes David in his deeply resonant voice. "The unspoken ritual of manhood in our society requires a home, requires a man to provide shelter for his family. If he can’t do that then he’s considered a failure, and how can he overcome that perception to take care of himself and the people who need him?" David quickly agrees that he was drawn to the socio-political overtones on They Live , but says his main incentive to do the picture was John Carpenter himself, for whom David did his first film role in The Thing "I loved working with John; he shows a lot of respect and appreciation for his actors and helps them grow. In this case, I was also attracted to working with Roddy Piper, who has been a real pleasure to know. This film has been a very satisfying experience, both artistically and ethically."

John Carpenter apparaît pour la première fois sur les écrans en 1970 pour The Resurrection Of Bronco Billy, un court-métrage dénotant déjà l'admiration sans borne de Carpenter pour le western. Le film gagna l'oscar du Best Short Live Action Film en 1970. Et oui ! Carpenter est donc déjà allé à une cérémonie des Oscars ! Et en vainqueur en plus ! Dark Star (1974) : est le premier long-métrage de Carpenter mais c'est avant tout son film de fin d'études. Co-écrit avec Dan O'Bannon (qui "empruntera" pas mal d'aspects du film pour écrire Alien, premier photocopillage de l'oeuvre de Carpenter, premier "emprunt" d'une longue longue longue série), Darkstar est un film de SF qui avec le recul n'est pas loin d'être révolutionnaire. Car si l'influence de 2001 est plus qu'évidente (et même celle de Forbidden Planet), le film annonce grandement des œuvres comme Alien (donc), Star Wars (mais si !) ou Outland. Très drôle et bourré de moments anthologiques (et pas seulement la scène de chasse à l'Alien), Darkstar est un classique du cinéma de SF. Assault On Precinct 13 (1976) : est le premier long-métrage "officiel" de Carpenter. Sur les bases du western, celui-ci réinvente le film de siège. On sent l'influence du Romero de la Nuit des Morts-Vivants, mais réciproquement Romero saura se souvenir de Assaut pour Dawn Of The Dead. Pour la première fois Carpenter vise le suspens pur et c'est déjà un coup de maître. Car le grand John peut mériter le titre de cinéaste le plus apte à créer l'épouvante dans ses œuvres. Assaut est un film impressionnant, mille fois plus que n'importe quel Tarantino (qui connaît lui aussi son Carpenter sur le bout des doigts). Les assaillants sont renvoyés dans l'abstraction, l'attente prime sur l'action, mais néanmoins la violence est parfois incroyable (on y descend une fillette quand même). Aller, j'ose le terme, c'est un Chef-d'Oeuvre.
