    Herbert Newton Casson
Herbert Newton Casson was born in Odessa, Ontario on 23 September 1869. He died at home in Norwood, Surrey on 4 September 1951. His father, the Reverend Wesley Casson, was a Methodist missionary from County Durham in northern England; his mother, Elizabeth Jackson, came from an immigrant family in Brantford, Ontario and had in her youth been known as ‘the Belle of Brantford’. During Casson’s youth the family moved around the remote bush towns of northern Ontario, as his father was posted to a new church every three years. The years 1877–80 were spent in the frontier province of Manitoba, whose population was still mostly nomadic Plains Indians and Métis (mixed race) peoples; years later, Casson recalled vividly the sight of armed Métis horsemen riding into the trading post where his father’s church was located (Casson 1931). The family returned to Ontario in early 1880, shortly before the outbreak of the Métis rebellion led by Louis Riel. Although he says he had no formal education until the age of seventeen, the years on the frontier taught Casson a great deal, including self-confidence and self-reliance. In his youth, he recalled, people turned their hands to everything necessary to make a living; if you did not know how to do something, then you learned. By the time Casson went to Victoria College (now part of the University of Toronto) in 1890 on a theology scholarship, he had acquired a hunger for knowledge, both theoretical and practical. The almost compulsive desire for learning is one of the constant features of his life:

Spiritwalk Library Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.net Project Gutenberg is the Internet's oldest producer of FREE electronic books (eBooks or eTexts). It intends to put as many books on-line as possible and to gather these on line works into one central location. It is a terrific service of the University of Illinois.
Project Gutenberg is the brainchild of Michael Hart, who in 1971 decided that it would be a really good idea if lots of famous and important texts were freely available to everyone in the world. Since then, he has been joined by hundreds of volunteers who share his vision. Now, more than thirty years later, Project Gutenberg has the following figures (as of November 8th 2002): 203 New eBooks released during October 2002, 1975 New eBooks produced in 2002 (they were 1240 in 2001) for a total of 6267 Total Project Gutenberg eBooks. 119 eBooks have been posted so far by Project Gutenberg of Australia
