CELLINI, BENVENUTO
Saltcellar of Francis I

Ganymede on the Eagle

Perseus With the Head of Medusa

Cellini, born in Florence in 1500, was a sculptor and goldsmith, working during the period of the Renaissance. He was perhaps the greatest goldsmith of the Renaissance, a little less distinguished as a sculptor. Even so Cellini was for a short time the student of the great master Michelangelo. Cellini worked in several cities in Italy including Rome, Sienna, Pisa, and Bologna. He executed various commissions for medallions bearing mythological themes.
While in France, which he spent under the service of Francis I, Cellini created the famous salt-cellar of gold , depicting Poseidon and Amphitrite as well as other sea deities. This is one of the most important pieces of the goldsmith's work to have survived from the Renaissance.
Cellini was known as a man with a quick temper, and was often landing himself in trouble with the law or being thrown out of various cities. He wrote a rather racy autobiography in 1538 which gave a somewhat embellished account of the his adventures and deeds. Nevertheless the book has been widely read since the 18th century when it was translated by the English writer Goethe. It provides a vivid picture of the daily life of a Renaissance craftsman, and gives some insight to the political and social atmosphere of the 16th century.

Cellini Cellini Benvenuto (1500-1571) was an Italian goldsmith and sculptor. The sculptor He was not regarded as an outstanding sculptor during his lifetime, and it is doubtful of his name would mean much today except for his writing. The autobiography His Autobiography was begun in 1558 and published in 1728. The Autobiography follows the bragging, arrogant Cellini through adventure after adventure in the courts of Rome, Florence, and Paris. He dramatized each incident as if it were an event that moved the world. His story Cellini's story is instructive as well as entertaining. It takes the reader through such historical events as the siege of Rome in 1527, and introduces people of his time in such a way that they seem to live again. He vividly describes every step of the casting of his masterpiece, Perseus. Cellini says that the completion of typical of his exaggerations. Purseus The reader must be on guard, especially when the artist appraises his own deeds. However, critics have praised Perseus for its expressive outlines and striking patina (oxidized surface). Cellini's only identifiable work as a goldsmith, except for some coins and medals, is an elaborate silver and gold table ornament known as the Saltcellar of Francis I. It was done in the 1540's. Home Michelangelo The forced poses, the influence of the both the movement known as mannerism and of Michelangelo. The same ornamentation appears in Cellini's semicircular bronze relief of the goddess Diana, called Nymph of Fontainbleau (1543-1544), made for King Francis I of France. Cellini was born in Florence.

It is among these extraordinary documents, and unsurpassed by any of them, that the autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini takes its place. But while St. Augustine's aim was religious and didactic, and Pepys noted down in his diary the daily events of his life for his own satisfaction and with no intention that any one should read the ciphered notes in which they were recorded, Cellini wrote that the world might know, after he was dead, what a fellow he had been; what great things he had attempted, and against what odds he had carried them through. Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571) led an adventurous life. At the age of fifteen he became a goldsmith against the will of his father, who wanted him to be a musician and composer. Rich Florentines, noblemen from Tuscany and even the church took an interest in the young goldsmith and gave him important commissions. Cellini became one of the most respected sculptors of his time, famous beyond the borders of Italy.
