Artists Represented in the
Renaissance to Contemporary Art History
Slide Library of Gerard Bowles
- NOTICE: No images - This is a list of artists represented in images from my personal slide library. I choose artists and slides according to the course, and the textbook, which may include the proto-Renaissance. This list is to assist students in spelling, dates and country for their notes. I may add some slides from my "Significant to American Art History" grouping according to institutional philosophy, student interests, and time constraints. However, I plan to use these in future American art history courses. I may also use some slides from an institution's library and other sources, and if the artists are not listed below I will give this information in lecture. I continue to build on my library and will update this list accordingly. This list does not encompass my slides of early art history artists, photographers, designers and mass-media, which are on separate lists, and I primarily use in studio courses related to those topics. The list is organized in chronological order by birth date of the artists. I believe this order is the fastest reference method for using this list. I suggest utilizing the "find" function of the Web browser. Students also have access to my Periods, Styles and Artists list. Accent and other marks are removed for Web searchesa common practice.

Overview of Sculptors
from 1200 to 1700
The period of transition from Romanesque to Gothic art, initiated in France. Almost no biographical material exists concerning the names and works of individual artists. Sculptures served as elements of the architecture. Italy showed considerable resistance to the northern Gothic ideas. ANTELAMI, Benedetto (active 1170-1230) Italian (Parma) Gothic sculptors (active 1200-1230) Various Gothic sculptors (active 1231-1250) Various
The European Gothic style emerged by about 1250. The pre-eminent cultural centre was Paris, mainly due to the French royal patronage. In Italy a different and authentic Gothic style appeared by Nicola Pisano. Arnolfo di Cambio developed ideas of the funeral monuments at the papal court in Rome. ARNOLFO DI CAMBIO (c. 1245-1310) Italian Gothic sculptors (active 1251-1300) Various PISANO, Nicola (active 1258-1278) Italian (Pisa, Siena)
By the normal standards of medieval history, a considerable amount is known about Tuscan sculpture in this period, which Vasari considered as the first stage of Renaissance sculpture. Beside Nicola Pisano's workshop, Lorenzo Maitani was an outstanding artist. The style of Andrea Pisano was much influenced by the art of painter Giotto.

http://www.pirandello.com/cellini.html
Benvenuto Cellini
Cited as being a " vital link between Michelangelo and the development of sculpture in Florence", Benvenuto Cellini contributed to the thinking that sculpture was seven times greater than painting since a statue had to have eight views, all of equal quality, four main views of the main axes and four of the diagonal axes. This concept of "multifaciality" came about when Cellini applied his genius to casting bronze with its startling elegance, variety and strength of detail, and personification of detail. Benvenuto Cellini was born in Florence, November 3, 1500, son of a musician, Giovanni and Elisabeta, who claimed noble descendancy. He studied music with his father until he was fifteen. Then, in spite of his father's protestations, he became an apprentice goldsmith to Antonio Mancone, who was considered an excellent craftsman. During the early part of his career which he spent in Rome and then in France, his work tended to be of small scale. Not many of his works are found for when his patrons fell into hard times, his creations were melted down and used as currency. Much of what we know about Cellini is found in his life story, the "Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini", written between 1558 and 1562 and published in 1730. His accounts read like a tale told by an artist‑picaro, a bohemian, a vagabond; however, it is one of the most important documents of the 16th century. He tells of his escapades with the frankness and consummate egoism characteristic of a Renaissance Man. He gives vivid pictures of vaunting, competitive, resourceful activities, not only of himself but most of the artists who were his contemporaries and rivals. It is one of the most celebrated autobiographies in history, giving intimate and lively pictures of the life and times and of the author's vivid and audacious personality.

BENVENUTO CELLINI
This is a statue of Perseus sculpted by Cellini.
INTRODUCTION
Cellini had a very strong, but strange, impression on the Italian High Renaissance.
BACKGROUND
Benvenuto Cellini was born in Florence in 1500. He was apprenticed to a goldsmith at the age of 15. At the age of 16, continual duelling and brawling caused him to be exiled to Sienna. In 1523, he was prosecuted yet again for fighting. The justice ruled that he be given the death penalty. Luckily for Cellini, he managed to flee to Rome. There, he became a pupil working under Michaelangelo. In 1527, he shot a constable of Bourbon and the Prince of Orange. In addition to his criminal list, Cellini was accused of killing a rival goldsmith. Ten years after the murder of the constable and the prince, he was accused of embezzlement. After being thrown in jail, he escaped with much skill to be foolishly caught and imprisoned again. Among his most famous patrons were Pope Clement VII, Pope Paul III, Francis 1 of France, and Cosimo 1 de Medici of Florence. Cellini was an accomplished sculptor and engraver. He was a versatile artist of the Italian High Renaissance. Throughout his career, Cellini worked for the Papacy and the Aristocracy.

Perseus Beheading Medusa Benvenuto Cellini Loggia dei Lanzi, Florence Bronze 18 feet high Jpg: Excite image search Medusa was a Gorgon and originally a beautiful maiden, but she desecrated the goddess Athena's temple by sleeping there with Poseidon. Outraged, Athena turned Medusa's hair into living snakes. Any man who looked upon her face would be turned into stone.
From: The Columbia Encyclopedia: Sixth Edition The gods, however, loved Perseus. Hermes gave him a curved sword and winged sandals, and Athena (who had her own run-ins with Medusa earlier) gave him a mirrorlike shield, and Hades a helmet that made Perseus invisible. Thus armed, Perseus slew Medusa. While fleeing the other Gorgons (Medusa’s sisters) Perseus asked Atlas for help. Atlas refused, and Perseus, by means of the Medusa head, promptly turned him into a mountain of stone. On his way home Perseus rescued Andromeda from a sea monster and married her. When he arrived in Seriphus, he killed Polydectes (that wicked guy that was making the moves on his mother) and his followers. He then gave the Medusa head to Athena . He went with his mother and his wife to Argos. There, while competing in a discus contest, Perseus accidentally killed his grandfather. Thus the prophecy was fulfilled.
