Nació en Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), probablemente el 29 de septiembre de 1547. Pasó su adolescencia en varias ciudades españolas (Madrid, Sevilla) y con poco más de veinte años se fue a Roma al servicio del cardenal Acquaviva. Recorrió Italia, se enroló en la Armada española y en 1571 participó con heroísmo en la batalla de Lepanto , donde comienza el declive del poderío turco en el Mediterráneo. Allí Cervantes resultó herido y perdió el movimiento del brazo izquierdo, por lo que fue llamado el
