Werk Von seinem frühen dramatischen Schaffen, einer Reihe von über 20 Comedias, blieb kaum etwas erhalten. Seine literaturhistorische Bedeutung liegt indessen ohnehin in seiner virtuosen Erzählkunst, wie seine Novellen und vor allem sein Meisterwerk, der Roman El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de La Mancha (1. Teil 1605, 2. Teil 1615; Der sinnreiche Junker Don Quijote von La Mancha), unter Beweis stellen. "Don Quijote" "Don Quijote" war ursprünglich als Satire auf die damals grassierende Manie der Ritterromane vom Schlag des Amadis von Gaula geplant, weitete sich aber schließlich zu einem lebendigen Panorama des zeitgenössischen Spanien und einem der facettenreichsten philosophischen Romane der Weltliteratur aus. Der Protagonist des Romans ist ein Hidalgo (Landedelmann). Diese ehemals auch militärisch angesehene Schicht war durch die Einführung moderner Waffen bedeutungslos geworden. Unter dem Einfluss der in den Ritterbüchern kolportierten Klischeevorstellungen des Mittelalters beschließt der Hidalgo, ein abenteuerliches und tugendsames Heldenleben zu führen. "Exemplarische Novellen" In den "Novelas ejemplares" (1613; Exemplarische Novellen) griff Cervantes ebenfalls bevorzugt Themen des spanischen Alltagslebens auf, mit teils didaktischer, teils unterhaltsamer Tendenz. Die außergewöhnlichste der Novellen ist El coloquio de los perros (Das Gespräch der Hunde), in welcher nach dem Muster der menippischen Satire menschliche Schwächen aus der Perspektive denkender und sprachbegabter Tiere kritisch beleuchtet werden. Diese Novelle regte später E. T. A. Hoffmann zu seiner satirisch-phantastischen Erzählung Neueste Nachrichten von den Schicksalen des Hundes Berganza (1814) an. Nach dem zweiten Teil des Don Quijote vollendete Cervantes noch den allegorischen Roman Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda (1617; Die Leiden des Persiles und der Sigismunda), wenige Tage vor seinem Tod.

Fue bautizado en la iglesia de Santa María el 9 de octubre de 1547. Hijo de Rodrigo de Cervantes, que fue médico de escasos recursos y de Leonor de Cortinas, fue el cuarto de siete hijos. Cervantes parece ser, estudió con los jesuitas de Córdoba o Sevilla y quizás en Salamanca. Con bastante seguridad podemos afirmar que fue discípulo de López de Hoyos, en el estudio de Madrid. Durante su adolescencia vivió en varias ciudades españolas (Madrid, Sevilla). Cuando cumplió veinte años, abandonó su país, para abrirse camino en Roma, ciudad donde estuvo al servicio del cardenal Acquaviva. Recorrió Italia, se enroló en la Armada española y en 1571 participó con heroísmo en la batalla de Lepanto, donde comienza el declive del poderío turco en el Mediterráneo. Fue en esta batalla, donde Cervantes perdió el movimiento del brazo izquierdo, por lo que fue llamado el Manco de Lepanto. The novel was intended as a satire on medieval tales of chivalry, but it presents a rich picture of Spanish life and contains many insights. Tehát az írók egyre több regényt írnak. De a költészet mellett a széppróza még mindig az irodalom határvidékéhez tartozik.
