Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish writer of the Golden Age, whose satiric novel Don Quixote is one of the masterpieces of the world literature. In 1998 Spain issued two wonderful sheets, each depicting various scenes from "Don Quixote". Both sheets are shown in small size immediately below. All stamps of both sheets have the surface value of 20 pesetas. Click on either of the images to zoom to full screen, with a short description of each of the stamps. Cuba has issued a nice set of stamps at the occasion of the 425th birth anniversary of Cervantes. To the left is the souvenir sheet, and below the three stamps in the set.

Cervantes' studies were probably too irregular and fragmentary to bring him within reach of an academic degree. In any case, finding no means of livelihood in Spain, he went to Italy, and in 1570 he emerges as an attendant, or camarero, Don Quixote , probably helped to preserve his life.
Eventually, the Trinitarian friars, with the help of money collected by Cervantes' family, managed to ransom him. He expected worthy rewards when he returned home, but actually he obtained almost nothing. Spanish officialdom took no notice of his existence, and, like many other Spaniards, Cervantes found himself at odds with the society in which he lived. Nevertheless, it was out of his experience in this very conflict that he was later to create Don Quixote.

Although Cervantes' reputation rests almost entirely on his portrait of the knight of La Mancha, El ingenioso hidalgo , his literary production was considerable. William Shakespeare, Cervantes' great contemporary, had evidently read Don Quixote , but it is most unlike that Cervantes had ever heard of Shakespeare. In spite of his fame, Cervantes remained a poor man. For if he like a madman lived,
At least he like wise old died.

Don Quixote epitaph) el manco de Lepanto (the cripple of Lepanto). After recuperation in Messina, Sicily, he continued his military career. In 1575 he set out with his brother Rodrigo on the galley El Sol for Spain. The ship was captured by pirates under Arnaute Mami and the brothers were taken to Algiers as slaves. Rodrigo was ransomed in 1577. The Moors though that Cervantes was more valuable captive because he had carried letters written by important persons. Cervantes spent five years as a slave until his family could raise enough money to pay his ransom. During this period he tried to escape several times without success. Cervantes was released in 1580, with the payment of 500 escudos raised by his family and the Trinitarian order. He returned to Madrid where he held several temporary, ill-paid administrative post. His first play, LOS TRATOS DE ARGEL (1580), was based on his experiences as a Moorish captive. In 1584 he married 18 years younger Catalina de Salazar y Palacios, the daughter of a well-to-do peasant. The marriage was childless. He had also a daughter, Isabel de Saavedra, from an affair he had with an actress, Ana Franca de Rojas (or Ana de Villafranca). Isabel worked as a servant in the family but her way of life caused him much worries. The other members of the household included his mother and two unmarried sisters.

Miguel de Cervantes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra September 9 April 23 ), was a Spanish author , best known for his novel Don Quixote de la Mancha
Biography
Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born to a family of modest means in 1547 in Alcalá de Henares Spain . He never obtained a university education. In 1569 he left for Italy where some elegies he wrote were published. He also joined a Spanish regiment there and was wounded while fighting in the Battle of Lepanto against the Turks in 1571; as a consequence, he lost the use of left hand. From then on he was called 'el manco de Lepanto' (Lepanto's one-handed). In 1575, while returning to Spain from the Netherlands, he was captured by Barbary pirates based in Algiers . He was held captive in Algiers until he was freed in 1580 when his ransom was paid.
