A widening World of Feeling

Haiku Around the World
Haiku haiku "an ultra-lilliputian kind of poem," he described it as "a little dab of colour thrown upon a canvas one inch square, where the spectator is left to guess at the picture as best he may." Accustomed as they were to much longer poems, Westerners reported home with wonder about the unusual brevity and concise images of haiku . Since then, haiku has become known worldwide and today is enjoyed and studied everywhere.
Naturally, many people enjoy writing haiku themselves. In languages that, unlike Japanese, do not have syllabic alphabets, the five-seven-five pattern corresponds not to written characters but to syllables. Thus the number of actual letters used to write non-Japanese haiku is usually more than seventeen. Various techniques are used in those languages to achieve haiku 's distinctive simplicity of expression, and there are no strict rules that apply to all languages. But there are some flexible guidelines. Even if the syllables are not arranged precisely five-seven-five, each poem generally has three lines in a short-long-short pattern. Instead of a seasonal word, many non-Japanese haiku express haiku -like feelings through topics chosen from nature. Because

    John Lane Company Records
    Index of Correspondents
Names in bold appear in the RLIN record. The correspondence retains, where known, the original Lane filing arrangement. Thus a letter originating from one person or corporate entity may be found under a different name if it was so filed in the Lane records. The parenthetical "with" references in this index will help guide the researcher to the appropriate location within the files.
