Next Origins of Pre-1800 Canutes Author: Tom Nevlud Date: 18 Sep 2002 7:57 PM GMT Classification: Query Post Reply Mark Unread Report Abuse Print Message I am researching the elusive Margaret Canute (Born about 1804) wife of Abraham Timmerman. They apparently lived in Herkimer County, NY. Not only has she been difficult to research, but Canutes in general during this time period have been difficult.
One individual claimed that originated as "Pennsylvania Dutch."
The earliest Canutes I have found are during the late 1700s. They are in Schenectedy and Montgomery Counties, NY.
From what I have seen, the origin of this name can be English, Danish, Dutch, German or Hugoneut or Flemish. I have seen. There is a listing of several Canute births during the late 1700s in records for St George's Episcopal Church, Schenectedy, NY. Some of the first names are Anglicized Dutch names, such as "Annatie." Also, there are three variations of the name: Canute, Cornue and Cornute.
Other variations of the name I have seen include Cornett, Knoet, Knut and Clute (possibly). There was a pioneer of aviation that collaborated with the Wright Brothers, Octave Chanute (1832-1910), who was born in Paris. Is this yet another version.
