Anton Chekhov Born on January 29, 1860, in Taganrog, Russia, on the Sea of Azov, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov would eventually become one of Russia's most cherished storytellers. Especially fond of vaudevilles and French farces, he produced some hilarious one-acts, but it is his full-length tragedies that have secured him a place among the greatest dramatists of all time. Chekhov began writing short stories during his days as a medical student at the University of Moscow. After graduating in 1884 with a degree in medicine, he began to freelance as a journalist and writer of comic sketches. Early in his career, he mastered the form of the one-act and produced several masterpieces of this genre including The Bear (1888) in which a creditor hounds a young widow, but becomes so impressed when she agrees to fight a duel with him, that he proposes marriage, and The Wedding (1889) in which a bridegroom's plans to have a general attend his wedding ceremony backfire when the general turns out to be a retired naval captain "of the second rank". Ivanov (1887), Chekhov's first full-length play, a fairly immature work compared to his later plays, examines the suicide of a young man very similar to Chekhov himself in many ways. His next play

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov
was a Russian physician and writer of short stories and plays. As Chekhov wrote to a friend, "Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress. When I get fed up with one, I spend the night with the other. Though it is irregular, it is less boring this way, and besides, neither of them loses anything through my infidelity." We are now pleased to host 201 stories by Chekhov, the entire collections translated by Constance Garnett, as scanned and annotated by James Rusk. See http://eldred.ne.mediaone.net/ac/jr/index.htm or http://www.freespeech.org/chekhov/ Chekhov readers owe James Rusk an eternal debt for this tremendous work! ANTON CHEKHOV
ANTON CHEKHOV'S life was short, intense and dominated by battles - either with his dependents or with the tuberculosis that was to kill him at forty-four. He was one of the greatest playwrights and short story writers ever born but he was torn between medicine and literature, as he was between family and friends, between a longing for solitude and a need for company. His family life was at times made a hell by a monstrous father, a possessive sister and delinquent elder brothers; his own was tortuously balanced between the affections of a series of mistresses and a marriage to an actress that was nothing like as idyllic as it has traditionally been painted.
The image of Chekhov and shows us what lay behind his restrained, ironic facade. The result does not denigrate him, but shows him in the full heroism of his brief but prodigiously creative life. Rayfield has spent over five years combing the Chekhov archives all over Russia (Chekhov was a restless traveller for the whole of his life, from Siberia to the Cote d'Azur), uncovering thousands of documents and letters from lovers, friends and family, most of them never published before, which culmulatively tell of a life far more entangled and turbulent than we ever previously suspected. The many cuts made in Soviet and foreign editions of Chekhov,.s and his wife's letters have been restored from the originals; what once was hidden is now revealed.

Chekhov, Anton Pavlovich 1860-1904, Russian writer and physician.
The son of a grocer and grandson of a serf, he helped support his family, while he studied medicine, by writing humorous sketches.
His reputation as a master of the short story was assured when in 1888 The Steppe, a story in his third collection, won the Pushkin Prize. The Island of Sakhalin (1893-94) was a report on his visit to a penal colony in 1890. Thereafter he lived in Melikhovo, near Moscow, where he ran a free clinic for peasants, took part in famine and epidemic relief, and was a volunteer census-taker. His first play, Ivanov (1887), had little success, but The Seagull (1898), Uncle Vanya (1899), The Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard (1904) were acclaimed when produced by the Moscow Art Theater.
In 1901 Chekhov married the actress Olga Knipper, the interpreter of many of his characters. Three years later he died of tuberculosis.
The style of his stories, novels, and plays, emphasizing internal drama, characterization, and mood rather than plot and focusing on the tragicomic aspects of banal events, had great influence.

    Anton Chekhov
Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (January 29, 1860, Taganrog, Russia - July 14/15, 1904, Badenweiler, Germany) was a doctor and writer. He qualified as a doctor in 1884 although he rarely practised. After a successful production of The Seagull by the Moscow Art Theatre, he wrote three more plays for the same company: Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard . In 1901 he married Olga Leonardovna Knipper (1870-1959), an actress who performed in his plays. Chekhov is one of the few Russian dramatists whose works are well known in western Europe. A common theme in his plays is the struggle of a sensitive individual to maintain his integrity against the temptations of worldly success.
