Biography of Anton Chekhov (1860-1904)
Chekhov is one of Russia's many important literary figures, and one of the greatest playwrights of modern times. He won the Pushkin Prize and he is known for his short stories and his plays, works which often combine elements of both comedy and tragedy. While works reflect the frequently turbulent developments specific to his homeland, their lasting appeal lies in Chekhov's talent for exploring universally human situations with such grace and dexterity. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in Tanarog, Russia, near the Sea of Azov, on January 17, 1860. The very fabric of Russian society was permanently altered when Chekhov was only one year old: on February 19, 1861, Russia's serfs were freed. Chekhov himself was the grandson of a serf, and the overturning of this older social order plays a central role in many of his writings. When his father's business failed, the family moved to Moscow, a Russian center for intellectuals. There, Chekhov grew intellectually, although he developed in two different directions. On the one hand, at the age of twenty he attended medical school at the University of Moscow, preparing himself for his lifelong profession as a physician. While at medical school, Chekhov also began writing to help support his family. He worked as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines; the respect he gained from these often humorous pieces encouraged Chekhov to begin writing serious short stories. Tolstoy, an older Russian contemporary of Chekhov's, was a great influence on the young writer and medical student. Chekhov was quoted as saying that medicine was his lawful wife and literature was his mistress, and he remained devoted to his two professions throughout his life.

"All I wanted was to say honestly to people: 'Have a look at yourselves and see how bad and dreary your lives are!' The important thing is that people should realize that, for when they do, they will most certainly create another and better life for themselves. I will not live to see it, but I know that it will be quite different, quite unlike our present life. And so long as this different life does not exist, I shall go on saying to people again and again: 'Please, understand that your life is bad and dreary!'" (Anton Chekhov, on his own style.) One of the most celebrated Russian playwrights and short story writers, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in Taganrog, an old port on the sea of Azov on January 17, 1860. He was of Russian peasant stock but his grandfather had bought the freedom of the family. Chekhov was very fond of vaudevilles and French farces, and he produced some hilarious one-acts. But it is his full-length tragedies that have secured him a place among the greatest dramatists of all time. One of the other reasons for Chekhov's popularity is the proliferation of all of life's colours in his works.

Anton Chekhov Memorial Chekhov, Anton Pavlovich (1860-1904), Russian dramatist and short-story writer, who is one of the foremost figures in Russian literature.
Modern critics consider Chekhov one of the masters of the short-story form. He was largely responsible for the modern type of short story that depends for effect on mood and symbolism rather than on plot. His narratives, rather than having a climax and resolution, are a thematic arrangement of impressions and ideas. Using themes relating to the everyday life of the landed gentry and professional middle class, Chekhov portrayed the pathos of life in Russia before the 1905 revolution: the futile, boring, and lonely lives of people unable to communicate with one another. Some of Chekhov's best known stories are included in the posthumously published Darling and Other Stories (1910; trans. 1916-22).
In the Russian theater Chekhov is preeminently a representation of modern naturalism. His plays, like his stories, are studies of the spiritual failure of characters in an aristocratic society that is disintegrating. To portray these themes Chekhov developed a new dramatic technique, which he called "indirect action." He concentrated on subtleties of characterization and interaction between characters rather than on plot and direct action. In a Chekhov play important dramatic events take place offstage. Some of his plays were originally rejected in Moscow, but his technique has become accepted by modern playwrights and audiences, and his plays appear frequently in theatrical repertories.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov Unlike most Russian writers of the nineteenth century, Anton Chekhov was not a child of the Russian gentry. Born into a middle-class family, Chekhov established his career as a writer at the same time as he studied to become a medical doctor at Moscow State University. He first won literary renown for his short stories, which initially concentrated primarily on comic themes. He wrote most of his more serious stories, including "Murder" (1895) and "In the Hollow" (1900), later in his career. In the United States and Western Europe, Chekhov is best known for the four plays which he composed at the turn of the century. The Seagull Uncle Vanya Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard (1903) were all produced on the stage of Konstantin Stanislavskii’s famed Moscow Art Theater, which created a new style of modern drama and a revolutionary technique of acting using Chekhov’s work. Chekhov died at the age of 44, a victim of tuberculosis which had made him a semi-invalid for the last years of his life. Post a message FAQ

Chekhov, Anton Pavlovich 1860-1904, Russian short-story writer, dramatist, and physician, b. Taganrog. The son of a grocer and grandson of a serf, Chekhov earned enduring international acclaim for his stories and plays. His early works, broad humorous sketches and tales published under a pseudonym, were written to support himself and his family while he studied for his medical degree in Moscow. Under this strain he contracted tuberculosis, which ravaged him all his life. Chekhov's first large collection, Motley Stories (1886), brought him critical respect; it was followed by the collections At Twilight (1887) and Stories The Island of Sakhalin, a study of the lives of convicts that helped to effect social reform; as a physician he fought two cholera epidemics. Chekhov wrote several farces related to his early stories, but his first major drama to be produced was Ivanov (1887). His success as a dramatist was assured when the burgeoning Moscow Art Theatre took his works for their own and built superb productions of them, beginning with
