The details of the life of Delano Ames are as mysterious as the books he wrote. The native of Knox County was educated at Yale University before he moved to England in his twenties. He published his first book in 1932, his last, as translator, in 1971. When queried recently, his estate was less than forthcoming: "Mr. Ames died a few years ago, and what you want to know about him will have to be through his books." A search of the Social Security Death Index suggests he died in 1987, but this remains unverified.
