He had been one of the leaders, with Eamon de Valera, of the Irish Republican Army rebellion against the Free State leadership of Michael Collins and Arthur Griffith. His son, Erskine Hamilton Childers, was president of Ireland in 1973-4. Childers, shown here in a photo around the time of the Boer War, was a cousin of Hugh Childers, who served Gladstone as First Lord of the Admiralty and Minister of War. As a clerk in the House of Commons, Erskine Childers had free time to sail on his 30-foot cutter

    Remembering Erskine Childers
    by James A. Paul
I was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Erskine Childers on Sunday, August 24th, 1996. He was stricken with a massive heart attack on Saturday shortly after delivering an address to the Fiftieth Congress of the World Federation of United Nations Associations in Luxemburg and died in hospital just a few hours later. With his passing, we lose a brilliant and deeply-committed internationalist, a fierce supporter of the United Nations and an extraordinary orator and analyst. Erskine was closely involved in the founding of Global Policy Forum and he served as the original co-chair of the board. Through his constant advice and enthusiastic support, he contributed enormously to the development of the organization. His presence at board meetings or public events always generated a sense of excitement, enthusiasm and the possibility for action. In circumstances that discouraged others, he carried on with unbounded optimism and belief in the possibilities of democratic action and grassroots effort. He combined a fierce outrage with a never-failing sense of humor. His writings are extremely lucid and passionately commited to global justice and solidarity. He devoted his life to building a democratic citizen movement to strengthen world cooperation, peace and social equality.

World Federalist Movement Mourns Passing of Erskine Childers
The World Federalist Movement is deeply saddened by the death of Erskine Childers. In this time of great crisis at the United Nations, the International Organization has lost one of its most committed defenders and leaders. No one was more effective and eloquent in exposing the ignorance, shamelessness, bigotry, and brute-power hypocrisy of those attacking the United Nations in recent years. WFM supported his call in recent years for a commission to investigate and evaluate, in light of accepted international and legal standards, the behavior of certain host countries of international organizations. Erskine was not uncritical of the UN, whose deficiencies he effectively analyzed. Unique among critics, however, Erskine Childers produced unequalled papers and books of research, analysis and proposals for a more effective UN. The highly influential report written with Sir Brian Urquhart "A World in Need of Leadership: Tomorrow's United Nations - A Fresh Appraisal" is being re-issued this week by the Ford and Dag Hammarskjold Foundations. For many years Erskine Childers was one of the highest ranking international diplomats who supported key principles of WFM, especially our proposals for the democratization of the UN and on the strengthening of the rule of law and protection of human rights. Erskine was an enthusiastic and intellectual champion of WFM's call for a UN consultative parliamentary assembly.

C arruthers is a jaded but wealthy civil servant working for the Foreign Office in London in a late summer of the 1890's. He receives an unwelcome but intriguing invitation from an old schoolmate to go sailing in the Baltic. Carruthers is disdainful of the proposer, one Arthur Davies, whom he remembers as unremarkable, even boring certainly not one of the beautiful people with which Carruthers associates. However, all of his usual cronies have gone off on holiday, and he is concerned that they will think badly of him if he just stays at home. As Carruthers joins Davies in Flensburg Fiord aboard the "Dulcibella", the mystery is already full-blown. Why would an old classmate, with whom he'd had no contact since college, decide suddenly to invite him sailing on his boat which was definitely not a yacht by Carruthers's standards in the Baltic at the end of September? Carruthers begins to doubt his judgment in accepting the invitation at all; but, sensing the mystery and the pleading attitude of Davies, he resolves to jump into the adventure and to try to enjoy himself. The result is the two sailors exploring the Friesland islands, while playing cat and mouse with the German authorities and a mysterious gentleman named Dollman, whose daughter Davies has fallen for. The sailing experiences alone are worth the price of the book. Childers, the author, had to spend his early life in just such an environment to be able to speak with such authority and to demonstrate such realism. Davies's use of tides, currents, winds, and lee shores in a real setting speaks authentically. The book stands alone as an excellent sailing adventure.

    Erskine Childers: conflicted Irish hero?
This looks a like a good read. The biography of a fascinating historical character, Erskine Childers:
Born in England but raised in Ireland, he fought for Britain in the First World War, before joining Sinn Fein and then the IRA. He was executed by the Irish Free State, but his son eventually became president of the Irish Republic. Chiefly known in Ireland for smuggling German guns into the country on the eve of the Great War, he is most famous in England as the author of the novel that, some say, anticipated - and may even have helped precipitate - that conflict. For a more swashbuckling account of escape, The Guardian's book of the week review is of The Voyage of the Catalpa: A Perilous Journey and Six Irish Rebels' Escape to Freedom
