However, the traditional school ways are often dull because they merely consist of presenting facts and data that have to be memorized by students. On the other hand, there can be another way of getting insight into a culture. What I am talking about is reading. Agatha Christie (1891-1976) is well-known for her crime novels (she wrote 66) with Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple as outstanding detectives. Maybe you yourself are acquainted with Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and Evil under the Sun, just to name a few. But it is not as well known that she also wrote under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, publishing eight books. And, she wrote under her married name, Agatha Christi-Mallowan, about her life in Syria and Iraq. Max Mallowan, her second husband, was an archaeologist, university professor, and author of a book about Iraqi finds. Returning back to the theme of getting insight into British life and culture, Christie's autobiography is noteworthy for the writer's thoughts about life's situations, both private and of a broader world context. She doesn't write about her life in a strictly chronological order. Whenever she feels it convenient, Christie stops the flow of narration and expresses her deep, frank thoughts and contemplations.

LA VOZ DE LA REINA DEL MISTERIO Agatha Christie está considerada una de las máximas exponentes de la novela policiaca e indudablemente es la reina del misterio. Su copiosa obra se ambienta generalmente en el periodo que antecede a la primera guerra mundial y está poblada de personajes emblemáticos, como el detective Hércules Poirot y la astuta Miss Marple. El misterioso caso de Styles (1920) inauguró su carrera. Sus relatos se caracterizan por los sorprendentes desenlaces y por la creación de dos originales detectives: Hercules Poirot y Miss Marple. Poirot es el héroe de la mayor parte de sus novelas, entre las que destacan El asesinato de Rogelio Ackroyd (1926) y Telón (1975), donde se produce la muerte del detective. Su primer matrimonio, con Archibald Christie, terminó en divorcio en 1928. En 1930, durante un viaje por Oriente Próximo, Christie conoció al prestigioso arqueólogo inglés Max Mallowan. Se casaron ese mismo año, y desde entonces Christie acompañó a su marido en sus visitas anuales a Irak y Siria. Utilizó estos viajes como material para Asesinato en Mesopotamia (1930), Muerte en el Nilo (1937), y Cita con la muerte (1938). Entre las obras teatrales de Christie cabe citar La ratonera, representada en Londres ininterrumpidamente desde 1952, y Testigo de cargo (1953; llevada al cine en 1957 en una magnífica versión de Billy Wilder y protagonizada por Charles Laughton, Marlene Dietrich y Tyrone Power), por la que recibió el premio de la crítica teatral de Nueva York para la temporada 1954-1955. A teatro vengono continuamente rappresentate le sue commedie e in televisione non fanno altro che passare film e telefilm tratti dalle sue opere. Agatha Christie nasce da una famiglia alto borghese. La prima cosa che la nostra autrice scrive e' che suo padre non ha mai dovuto lavorare, ma questo non lo dice per snobismo, semplicemente per dovere di cronaca. Suo padre viveva di una rendita, non stratosferica, ma abbastanza per non dover lavorare. Quello tra suo padre e sua madre e' stato un matrimonio felice, che ha dato i suoi frutti donando ai figli un'infanzia felice, che a sua volta ha prodotto nella nostra autrice una inesauribile gioia di vivere. Sono bellissimi i racconti di quando da piccola andava a fare il bagno in una spiaggia riservara alle sole donne, che indossavano enormi costumi di lana e addirittura delle calze. Le donne si spgliavano dentro delle cabine di legno, che poi venivano avvicinate al mare in modo da fare scendere la signora gia' in acqua, per far vedere il meno possibile la figura in costume. Naturalmente gli uomini nel loro tratto di spiaggia indossavavno un costume ridottissimo. Sono interessantissimi i capitoli in cui descrive gli schemi sociali, i rapporti con la servitu' e il livello di alta professionalita' dei domestici, sembra di rivivere le atmosfere che si respirano nel romanzo "Quel che resta del giorno" di Ishiguro Kazuo.
