The Mormon Connection The LDS Church and Genealogy by Jan McClintock The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints maintains the largest genealogical data collection in the world, at the main Family History Library in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The library collects information from members and other submitters through the Genealogical Society of Utah, the corporate business end of the Family History Department of the church. The reason that the LDS church is so interested in genealogy is explained in church doctrine: family love and life can continue forever, even after death. To help make this happen, members want to be able to perform the temple ordinances, namely baptisms, endowments, and sealings to spouses and to parents, and also confirmations and ordinations. Endowments are like promises to the Lord to obey the covenants that are set by Him for life on Earth. Sealings are a binding together of families; husband and wife, and children to parents, in order to spend eternity together. The church believes that these ordinances should be performed on behalf of ancestors who did not have the opportunity themselves. Ancestors are not forced to take the ordinances; they must accept the opportunity to do so.

Darrel Chamberlain TEMPLE STATISTICS Dedicated Under Construction Awaiting Construction TOTAL Two New Temples are Announced The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced plans to construct new temples in Curitiba, Brazil, and Panama City, Panama. The Curitiba Brazil Temple will serve more than 42,000 Latter-day Saints in a temple district that will include 21 stakes from the Brazilian states of Parana and Santa Catarina. Nine stakes are located in the Curitiba metropolitan area. This will be the fifth Latter-day Saint temple in Brazil. Four temples have been dedicated in Sao Paulo, Campinas, Porto Alegre and Recife. Members of the Church in Panama enthusiastically welcomed the news of the first temple to be built in their country. The Panama City Panama Temple will serve approximately 22,200 Latter-day Saints in the seven stakes and three districts of the Church in Panama. The Anchorage Alaska Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints The second of the new small temples, Anchorage incorporates several new features. For example, the Angel Moroni on the Monticello Temple is white, durring overcast days the statue seems to disappear because of its unobtrusive color. For the Anchorage Temple the Angel Moroni is gold as in all other temples. To give the temple an Alaskan feel the west wall includes several star stones set in the pattern of the Big Dipper. This constellation is important for two reasons. Since the Big Dipper points to the north star, and hence represents northern lands, it was used in the Alaskan state flag. Its pointing to the north star, which is the only fixed star in the sky, also symbolizes pointing the way to truth, and as such it is part of the symbolism on the exterior of the Salt Lake Temple. Also, stylized evergreen trees are seen on most of the doors, forget-me-nots, the Alaska State flower, decorate the Sealing Room, and the altars are decorated with Native American influenced designs. The temple was announced in October 1997.
