Mormonism - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS)
Welcome to a look at Mormonism. In the background (if you have a sound card on your computer and have a "midi" music plug-in like Quicktime ) you should be hearing a popular hymn called "O God, Our Help In Ages Past," from the Mormon Hymnal. Ever wondered what Mormons believe? You've probably seen the white-shirted guys riding bikes around your neighborhood and the Church-produced television commercials offering free Bibles. We have a hint that they place great importance on frugality, the family and family life. But what else do they believe? It is not often easy to find out the full complexity of the beliefs and teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and how these beliefs differ significantly from orthodox Christianity. Photo: Mormon Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (some don't like it to be called the Mormon Church, but an unofficial adopted name of the members is the Mormons) has claimed about 4.8 million members in the U.S. Fifty-three percent are women. This would amount to a little less than 2% of the U.S. population or about 1 of every 50 people. However, the church probably is counting everyone who ever joined, but has no record of those who leave the church and don't get their names removed, or just stop attending church. My guess is that the church has considerably less actual attending members than they claim. Of the members, it has been estimated that somewhere between 10 and 30% of Mormons hold a "temple recommend" which allows them to enter the Temples where secret ceremonies such as baptisms for the dead ancestors, and marriage ceremonies are held for those with "temple recommends".

The St.Clairs are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This Christian religion is neither Catholic nor Protestant, but believes that a modern Prophet restored the true Church in 1830. Its scriptures include the Old and New Testaments of the Bible and also the Book of Mormon, another witness of Jesus Christ. The Church has ten million members around the world. It has been described by religious critic Harold Bloom as the ultimate example of the "American Religion"; by historian Jan Shipps as the next major "New Religious Tradition"; and by futurist and economist Joel Kotkin as one of the up and coming global "Tribes" that will influence the world in the 21st Century.

THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS ADDRESS : 50 East North Temple Street Salt Lake City, Utah 84150 OTHER NAMES : Latter-day Saints, LDS LEADER : Gordon B. Hinckley, Prophet and President CURRENT MEMBERSHIP : At the close of 1999, the church reported over 11 million members in over 17,305 congregations worldwide. The church is now organized in 128 nations and territories and has over 65,000 full-time missionaries serving in 228 missions around the world. HISTORICAL ROOTS : Organized during the period of unrest and "revival" in the U.S. during the 1800s. Joseph Smith, Jr., uncertain as to which of the various Protestant denominations was the true church, prayed for divine insight. In answer to this prayer, God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him to inform him that none were right, but that the fullness of the gospel would be revealed to him in the future. Later, the Angel Moroni delivered to him an ancient record, on gold plates, containing the history and religious teachings of a people who had migrated from Jerusalem to America some 600 years before Christ. These people, believed by the Mormons to be forefathers of at least some of the American Indians, had recorded their religious experiences, including a record of their encounter with the resurrected Christ. These were translated and published by Joseph Smith, Jr., and are known as The Book of Mormon . The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was formally organized on April 6, 1830, in the home of Peter Whitmer in Fayette, New York, by Joseph Smith, Jr., and five others. Joseph Smith, Jr., was the first President of the Church. From New York, the Mormons moved to the Midwest. Expelled from Illinois, they were led by Brigham Young, the second President of the Church, to the basin of the Great Salt Lake.

About Temple Square Often referred to as the "Crown Jewel" of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , Temple Square is part of the central campus of the LDS Church (also referred to as the "Mormon Church"), and serves not only as a cultural center for the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, but also as the most popular tourist attraction in the state of Utah. Most prominent among the six buildings on Temple Square is the Salt Lake Temple , whose neo-Gothic exterior is a widely-recognized symbol of the devotion of the early Mormon pioneers, and whose interior, to the surprise of many, contains no pipe organs. Almost as prominent is the domed, "turtle-back" roof of the

Latter Day Saints, Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of, a Mormon body that regards itself as the successor of the church founded by Joseph Smith . They organized in 1852, with Joseph Smith, Jr. (son of the Mormon founder), as their first president, and since that time have been separate and distinct from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with its headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. The headquarters of the Reorganized Church were first at Plano, Ill., until 1881, then at Lamoni, Iowa, until 1904, and since 1904 in Independence, Mo. The doctrines of the church are derived from the Bible, the Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price (sayings ascribed to Moses and Abraham), and the revelations made to Joseph Smith. Brigham Young and his position on polygamy are rejected; there are other beliefs and practices they do not share with the Mormons. In 1997 there were about 249,000 members.
