Cornish Arts Colony in Cornish and Plainfield, NH 1885-1930.
Site Municipality : Cornish and Plainfield, NH. Site Type : Multiple Property Listing. National Register Nomination Information: STATEMENT OF HISTORIC CONTEXTS: Cornish Art Colony The arrival of Augustus Saint-Gaudens in Cornish in 1885 marked the beginning of the Cornish Colony, one of the earliest art colonies in the U.S. Like their counterparts in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Dublin, New Hampshire, the Cornish art colonists were attracted by the area's natural beauty, climatic advantages and relative seclusion as well as by the mutual encouragement and intellectual stimulation offered by a variety of resident artists. The artists who were associated with the Cornish Colony settled in both Cornish and Plainfield, New Hampshire. The initial wave of artists, those who arrived in Cornish and Plainfield, prior to 1895, were primarily painters. Among the earliest to follow Saint-Gaudens were George de Forest Brush and Thomas Dewing. Brush lived in a tepee on Saint-Gaudens' field in 1887 and subsequently rented from Beaman while Dewing rented in 1886 before buying a house from Beaman the following year. Others who followed included painter Henry O. Walker; architect, painter and etcher Charles Platt; painter and etcher Stephen Parrish and his son, illustrator and painter, Maxfield, and painter and art critic Kenyon Cox, all of whom came to the colony, bought land and built residences in the 1890s. Some, including sculptor Daniel Chester French; painter, John White Alexander, and sculptor, Paul Manship came only for a few summers, as did President Woodrow Wilson, who made author Winston Churchill's "Harlakenden House", which burned in 1923, a summer White House. from 1913 to 1915.

Plainfield Town Hall.
Site Municipality : Plainfield, NH. Location : Route 12A. Site Type : Town Hall. UTMs : (Zone 18) E: 713750. N: 4823470. National Register Nomination Information: DESCRIPTION: Exterior Architectural Description:
Set back approximately twenty feet from Route 12A, the main thoroughfare in Plainfield, the Town Hall is a rectangular one story clapboard structure with a broad gable front facing westward. The Town Hall is comprised of three sections. The original structure with three bay wide side elevations was supplemented by a rear stage addition of the same height in 1916, approximately a third of the size of the original section and containing two additional bays. On the side elevations, interruptions in the siding and differing windows indicate the distinction between the original structure and addition. A shed addition spans the rear of the stage section. The original building is supported by a fieldstone foundation while the remainder is set upon a concrete foundation. The roof of the shed is sheathed in asphalt shingles, the gable roof is covered with 18" slate shingles of many different hues. On the south elevation, three tall 20/20 doublehung sash windows with simple surrounds mark the original section of the building. A single casement window is cut into the fieldstone foundation. In the original section but adjacent to first addition, is a four panelled wooden door. Seven cast iron steps complete with a handrail lead to this side entranceway. The south elevation of the stage addition contains two 15/15 doublehung sash windows. There are only two other features on this section's south elevation: a single light casement window in the concrete foundation and a single panelled wooden door leading under the stage area. The south side of the shed addition, which.is only ten feet wide, contains a square panelled door leading into a storage area.

    Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

E-M N-Z 1. ALLEN, MERRITT PARMELEE, 1892-1954. The Wilderness Way, by Merritt Parmelee Allen. Decorations by Larry Toschik. New York, London [and] Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co., [1954.] 246p. LaSalle's first two ventures into the northern wilderness which is now Illinois in search of a route down the Mississippi River to France make up the major portion of this novel. The story revolves around the experiences of Laurent Delair, a young Frenchman who joins the first LaSalle expedition before it leaves Quebec, follows LaSalle and Tonty faithfully in two abortive attempts to reach the mouth of the Mississippi and accompanies them in their successful third trek. Opposition from the fur traders of the northwest, severe winter weather, hostile Indians, and discontent among his followers combine to delay LaSalle's success for several years. A fictionalized account of these years, The Wilderness Way is an adequate retelling of the LaSalle story, combined with excellent descriptions of the country and plenty of action to create a rousing novel of America during the late 1600s. Book Review Digest , 1954, p. 12.
