His father, an automobile-parts salesman, died in a car accident three months before Bill was born. His mother, Virginia Cassidy, married Roger Clinton, an automobile dealer, when Bill was seven years old. The family moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Bill and his younger half brother, Roger, Jr., attended public schools. His mother often engaged Bill in political discussions and encouraged his ambitions. Growing up had its difficulties, however, because his stepfather was an alcoholic who sometimes beat his mother. Virginia and Roger eventually divorced but soon remarried, when Bill was 15. As a gesture Bill had his last name legally changed to Clinton. Bill participated in many activities, including student government, at Hot Springs High School. In the summer of 1963 he was chosen to attend the American Legion Boys State, a government and leadership conference, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was elected a senator and given the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. where he shook hands with President John F. Kennedy. When Bill returned to Arkansas, politics became a pursuit from which he never wavered.

I am going to say this again: I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.
Sex

I experimented with marijuana a time or two. And I didn't like it, and I didn't inhale and never tried it again.
Drugs

I tried marijuana once. I did not inhale.

It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If theif heif 'is' means is and never has been, that is notthat is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement. . . . Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true. - in a deposition during the Paula Jones/Monica Lewinsky matter [ Words The light may be fading on the 20th century, but the sun is still rising on America.

William Jefferson Clinton President of the United States
BILL CLINTON, America's last president in the 20th century and only the second president to be impeached in U.S. history, has weathered storms that might have killed most other politicians.
Allegations of marital infidelity, questions about marijuana use and how he avoided the Vietnam War, a real-estate scandal in his home state, flip-flopping on foreign policy, charges of sexual harassment by an Arkansas government employee, accusations of ordering military action overseas to divert public attention from personal troubles, allegations of receiving millions of dollars from Chinese agents for his re-election campaign, and a yearlong scandal over an extramarital affair with a former White House intern that led to his impeachment these and other issues repeatedly give rise to questions about Clinton's character and made the former Arkansas governor one of the most assailed and investigated presidents in history.
But Bill Clinton's charm, determination, razor-sharp political skills, and an unusually long stretch of national economic prosperity helped pull him through a second election in 1996 and kept his popularity high throughout much of his second term.

"I want an America where family values live in our actions, not just in our speeches."
[Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speech of then Governor Clinton, Democratic National Convention - July 1992] "If a President of the United States ever lied to the American people, he should resign." [Candidate Bill Clinton, responding to a question about President Nixon , while running for the US House of Representatives in 1974.]
Impeachment, Acquittal with Rebuke,
Contempt, and finally, the "End of It."
Putting An End To It:

In return for the dropping of any criminal or civil charges against him, President Clinton agreed to a five year suspension of his Arkansas law license, the payment of a $25,000 fine and an agreed that he would not seek government reimbursement of his legal expenses. For three years this simple act of admitting that he had lied had been, and would continued to be, steadfastly avoided by President Clinton. This despite the fact that nearly no one in America believed that he had not lied. Despite also the fact that many Americans over the three years, both supporters and opponents of the President, increasingly advocated for the President to do just that. This position was based largely on a belief that if he had simply told the full truth, admitted at any point that he "lied," the incident would have more quickly faded from the public debate.

Clinton's inauguration on Jan. 20, 1993, culminated a nearly lifelong desire to become president. Although he was happy to hold the nations highest office, he could not have envisioned the scandal and personal law trouble that would plauge his presidency. By any measure, Clinton achieved many of his political goals in remarkably rapid fashion. Elected Arkansas attorney general in 1976, he won the gubernatorial election in 1978 at age 32, making him the nation's youngest governor. Prior to his election to statewide office, Clinton had earned a B.A. degree in international affairs from Georgetown University, won a Rhodes scholarship to attend Oxford University, and graduated from Yale Law School. He taught briefly at the University of Arkansas Law School before embarking on a political career.

Clinton, Bill Clinton, Bill (William Jefferson Clinton), In 1992 Clinton won the Democratic presidential nomination after a primary campaign in which his character and private life were repeatedly questioned and, with running mate Senator Albert Gore of Tennessee, went on to win the election, defeating Republican incumbent George Bush and independent H. Ross Perot . In his first year in office, Clinton won passage of a national service program and of tax increases and spending cuts to reduce the federal deficit. He also proposed major changes in the U.S. health-care system that ultimately would have provided health-insurance coverage to most Americans. Clinton was unable to overcome widespread opposition to changes in the health-care system, however, and in a major policy defeat, failed to win passage of his plan. Clinton's wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton , whom he married in 1975, played a more visibly active role in her husband's first term than most first ladies; she was particularly prominent in his attempt to revamp the health-care system. In 1994 Clinton sent U.S. forces to Haiti as part of the negotiated restoration of Jean-Bertrand
