43. The Lane Report -- Top Shelf May 2002
Author Irvin S. Cobb (18761944), who hailed from Paducah, waxed almostpoetic in describing the proper way to make a mint julep.

TOP SHELF The Finest in Products and Services in Kentucky
by Claude Hammond
Style, Taste, Reflected in New Kentucky Cocktails They say that fashion runs in circles and that old styles make reappearances in new incarnations. This has certainly been true with bourbon, where super premium whiskies have found an enthusiastic new audience. It is also true with cocktails, as the martini especially enjoys resurgence. Restaurateurs McCarty and Johnston said that second to martinis, cosmopolitans and Manhattans probably rank second and third in customer popularity. Still significant to Kentucky barroom customers is the classic bourbon and branch water. Earlier this month, possibly hundreds of thousands of race fans and partygoers enjoyed that favorite Kentucky cocktail, the mint julep. Handed down through history are two mint julep recipes from two famous Kentuckians:

Brevity
Anecdotes, humor, and quotations on the topic of brevity from the IdeaBank® on-line service. An ancient African tribe has this rule: a speaker must stand on one leg while addressing the audience. As soon as his second foot touches the ground, he must stop. Say what you have to say and the first time you come to a sentence with a grammatical endingsit down. Winston Churchill (1874-1965) Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:2 Few sinners are saved after the first twenty minutes of a sermon. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) (1835-1910)
American writer and humorist
Hannibal Courier-Post, March 6, 1835 The luncheon speaker was told to begin his talk promptly at 1:15 p.m., and he asked the club president how long he should talk. "Talk as long as you'd like," replied the President. "We all leave at 1:30 anyhow." Speaking of brevity, the shortest inaugural address was George Washington'sjust 135 words. The longest was William Henry Harrison's in 1841. He delivered a two-hour, 9,000 word inaugural speech into the teeth of a freezing northeast wind. The new President of the United States came down with a cold the following day, and a month later he died of pneumonia.

Historical and Biographical Note
The publishing enterprises of Samuel Sidney McClure are an important facet of early twentieth-century American journalism. The McClure Syndicate, started by Samuel Sidney McClure in 1884, was the first successful company of its kind, and was largely responsible for introducing many American and British writers to a national public. His later venture, McClure's Magazine , contained the influential "muckraking" articles of Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker, and Lincoln Steffens; it also had the distinction of promoting the then-unknown writer, Willa Cather. Although S.S. McClure's tenuous business competency would cause him to lose control over these ventures in the early part of the twentieth century, other members of his family, most notably his cousin, Henry Herbert McClure (d. 1938), were able to maintain a more steady career in the publishing world through the 1930s.

Nazi slogan February 26, 2002 Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations.
Steve Jobs February 25, 2002 Neither observation nor reason is an authority. Intellectual intuition and imagination are most important, but they are not reliable: they may show us things very clearly, and yet they may mislead us. They are indispensable as the main sources of our theories; but most of our theories are false anyway. The most important function of observation and reasoning, and even of intuition and imagination, is to help us in the critical examination of those bold conjectures which are the means by which we probe into the unknown.
-– Sir Karl Raymund Popper (1902-1994) February 24, 2002 All political theories assume, of course, that most individuals are very ignorant. Those who plead for liberty differ from the rest in that they include among the ignorant themselves as well as the wisest.
