    Wilkie Collins (1824-1889)
    Biographical note
English novelist, credited with writing the first mystery. Wilkie (William) Collins was born in London on January 8, 1824. His father (also called William) was a landscape painter, but it seems his father had ambitions for his son outside the arts. Wilkie was first found a place in the tea trade, but displayed no aptitude for commerce. He then studied law at Lincoln's Inn, he was admitted to the bar in 1851 but didn't prosper here either. It was only when he started writing that he seemed to find his vocation. His first published work was written in memory of his father, who died in 1847. Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. was published in 1848. He started writing fiction shortly afterwards.

Worked in a tea importers'; studied law; painted (one of his works was exhibited at the Royal Academy).
Did you know? He suffered from taphophobia, the fear of premature burial, carrying with him at all times a letter imploring anyone finding him 'dead' to get a second opinion from a doctor. Critical verdict What was called at the time 'Sensation Fiction' is now studied for its influence on detective fiction and alliances to Gothic, though Trollope defended his friend against charges of anti-realism: "Truth let there be, - truth of description, truth of character, human truth as to men and women. If there be such truth, I do not know that a novel can be too sensational." In his lifetime, Collins was as feted as Dickens, with whom he collaborated in the theatre and on the magazines Household Words and All the Year Round; since then his reputation has waned, although TV adaptations have recently resparked interest. The Moonstone is often cited as the first work to contain all the elements of twentieth-century detective fiction: country houses, inside jobs, foolish local policemen, eccentric investigators, et al.

    RLIN: Selecting a Record
Virtually any bibliographic record can be modified for use for Acquisitions functions; the same is not true for cataloging functions. It is very important to select the best possible record for cataloging at the time of the initial search because overlaying a record with a better record is awkward and time consuming. Records are deemed usable for copy cataloging or not usable for copy cataloging. On receipt material with usable copy is routed to the Copy Cataloging Section. Material without usable copy is routed to the Cataloging Receiving Section. Select the RLIN record that most closely describes the material requested and that has the best usable copy. Check and match the following fields of the on line record against the request or the book in hand:
    • title including subtitles (245 field)
    • main entry (1xx field)
    • publication information (260 field)
    • edition statement (250) if there is one.

    Wilkie Collins

    http://www.robert-morten.de/baseportal/Redaktionssytem/britannia_mini_detail&Id=
Collins, William Wilkie (1824-1889) Englischer Schriftsteller.
