Peace rules the day where reason rules the mind. "I am not against hasty marriages, where a mutual flame is fanned by an adequate income." I am (thank God) constitutionally superior to reason. This is the story of what a Woman's patience can endure, and what a Man's resolution can achieve.

Wilkie Collins
Defined sometimes as Father and other times as Grandfather of the British Detective genre, Wilkie Collins was born in London in 1824. He was son of the landscape painter William. He studied law but seemed to have had little interest in both the latter as well as commerce. However he was good at writing and painting (had a picture hung in the Royal Academy). Collins' first book was a biography of his father (1848) followed by a romance ( Antonina; or the Fall of Rome ) and Basil . Starting from 1851 he began an association with Charles Dickens where he learnt how to characterize and add humor to his work. Dickens was influenced by him as shown in the more suspenseful plots of A Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations . Collins' first major success, The Woman in White , appeared on Dickens' periodical All the Year Round . Despite the enormous amount of publications (including collection of essays, a travelling book, romances, ghost stories, non fiction, plays) he will be remembered mainly for writing

Antonina (1850), a historical romance. He found his true field, however, in the novel of modern life, in which his power lies chiefly in the construction of a skilful plot, which holds the attention of the reader and baffles his curiosity to the last. In Count Fosco, however, he has contributed an original character to English fiction. Among his numerous novels two, The Woman in White (1860), and The Moonstone (1868), stand out pre-eminent. Wilkie Collins (18241889) - English author of The Woman in White,The Moonstone, and other mystery, suspense and crime novels.
http://www.sff.net/people/gunn/dd/c.htm

Carbonari - Members of certain secret revolutionary societies that were current in Italy and France in the early part of the 19th century, aimed at freeing Italy from foreign rule and obtaining constituional rule. Lord Byron was a member, joining out of "love for Italy." The organization shrouded itself in an air of mystery, with a secret terminology and fantastic rituals, and included all ranks of people as its members nobles, army officers, peasants, landlords, priests, and government officials. In January of 1858, an assassination attempt was made on Napoleon III, injuring the French Emperor and killing or wounding sixty people. The plot supposedly was hatched in England by members of the Carbonari Society and the grenades used were made in England. Mass hysteria resulted on both sides of the Channel 20,000 Londoners demonstrated in Hyde Park, shouting "Down with the French!"
The Catholic Encyclopedia on the Carbonari Cart - The Swiss valet Prince Albert brought with him from Coburg, who had been in his service since the prince was a child. Catastrophism - A theory that, since the flow of water and crumbling of rocks could not have produced the earth's surface in the years since Biblical creation, drastic changes visible in landforms were cause by sudden cataclysms.

Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) Memoirs of an Adopted Son , by Wilkie Collins , Gaslight, Mount Royal College, Canada: I quote from Collins' head note: "The curious legend connected with the birth of this "Adopted Son," and the facts relating to his extraordinary career in after-life, are derived from the "Records" of the French Police of the period. In this instance, and in the instances of those other papers in the present collection which deal with foreign incidents and characters, while the facts had been readily accessible to readers in general, the papers in question would not have been reprinted. But the scarce and curious books from which my materials are derived have been long since out of print, and are, in all human probability, never likely to be published again."-MJM Wilkie Collins , Bibliomania: With a little persistence one can find links to the following e-texts: A Terribly Strange Bed Moonstone The Lady of Glenwith Grange and The Woman in White . English novelist, whose unconventional private life and determination to tackle social issues disconcerted his audience. Many of Wilkie Collins's novels contain sympathetic portraits of physically abnormal individuals. Critics often credit Collins with the invention of the English detective novel. While he was aware of the work of Poe and Gaboriau, he worked in the mainstream of Victorian domestic and social fiction. Sergeant Cuff from Collins's novel THE MOONSTONE (1868) became a prototype of the detective hero in English fiction. "Good night, Mr. Betteredge," he said. "And mind, if you ever take to growing roses, the white moss rose is all the better for not being budded on the dog rose, whatever the gardener may say to the contrary!"
"What are you doing here?" I asked. "Why are you not in your proper bed?"

    William Collins R.A.
William Collins R.A. was one of the best known artists of his time. He painted more than 200 major works and hundreds of minor ones. He was elected an associate member of the Royal Academy on 7 November 1814 and a full member in 1820 and, apart from two years in Italy, he exhibited there every year from 1807 until the year before his death in 1847. His patrons included King George IV, the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, four Dukes, numerous other aristocrats, MPs, industrialists and members of the clergy. Despite his contemporary fame, he is now relatively unknown and his pictures are hard to find. Many of those that are in public collections are not on display and some of the finest are either lost or remain, perhaps unrecognised, in private hands. These pages bring together some of his work together with biographical material. Much that is known about him comes from the two volume Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A. by his son, the novelist Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) which was published in 1848. William's other son was the artist and writer Charles Allston Collins (1828-1873)
