PROMETHEUS
Mythology's Original Rebel
The Golden Fleece and the Heroes
Who Lived before Achilles, 1921,
by Padraic Colum (1881–1972) The dark-winged hound of Zeus will come, the
savage eagle,
An uninvited banqueter, and all day long
Will rip your flesh in rags, and feast upon your
liver, Gnawing it black.
Hermes, "Prometheus Bound", by Aeschylus QUICK INTRODUCTION When Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods, was young and trying to establish his rule, he was challenged by a group of ferocious Titans, who tried to keep him from gaining power. A long and terrible war ensued, with all the Olympian gods joined against the Titans, who were led by Zeus' father Cronus and mighty Atlas. After ten years of fighting, and with the help of the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires (The Hundred-Handed-Ones), Zeus and his fellow Olympians defeated the enemy. Only a few Titans, particularly Prometheus and his brother Epimetheus, fought on the side of Zeus, against their fellow Titans. You see, Prometheus was very wise - wiser even than most of the gods - and foresaw the winner of the battle between the Olympians and the Titans. He persuaded his impulsive brother Epimetheus to also fight on the side of Zeus against gigantic Atlas and his army. Once Zeus emerged victorious he granted the brothers some just rewards.

ATALANTA'S RACE
illustration by Willy Pogany ATALANTA'S RACE
by Padraic Colum (1881–1972) from
The Golden Fleece and the Heroes
Who Lived before Achilles, 1921.
There are two Atalantas, she said; she herself, the Huntress, and another who is noted for her speed of foot and her delight in the race—the daughter of Schœneus, King of Bœotia, Atalanta of the Swift Foot. So proud was she of her swiftness that she made a vow to the gods that none would be her husband except the youth who won past her in the race. Youth after youth came and raced against her, but Atalanta, who grew fleeter and fleeter of foot, left each one of them far behind her. The youths who came to the race were so many and the clamor they made after defeat was so great, that her father made a law that, as he thought, would lessen their number. The law that he made was that the youth who came to race against Atalanta and who lost the race should lose his life into the bargain. After that the youths who had care for their lives stayed away from Bœotia. Once there came a youth from a far part of Greece into the country that Atalanta’s father ruled over. Hippomenes was his name. He did not know of the race, but having come into the city and seeing the crowd of people, he went with them to the course. He looked upon the youths who were girded for the race, and he heard the folk say amongst themselves, “Poor youths, as mighty and as high-spirited as they look, by sunset the life will be out of each of them, for Atalanta will run past them as she ran past the others.” Then Hippomenes spoke to the folk in wonder, and they told him of Atalanta’s race and of what would befall the youths who were defeated in it. “Unlucky youths,” cried Hippomenes, “how foolish they are to try to win a bride at the price of their lives.”

Buried in the fields behind Longford's St. Joseph's Hospital are thousands of remains of victims of the Great Famine. Containing two acres of land, it is thought that this is Ireland's largest famine graveyard. There are no marked graves, just a High Cross, a tomb and a commemorative plaque. Human remains can be found just inches beneath the soil. It is believed that conditions became so bad that those left alive were simply too weak to dig graves and just rolled the bodies down the hill and covered them with soil where they lay, and thus built up the grim testimony to Ireland's darkest hour, layer upon layer.

English 683 The Irish Short Story cmay@csulb.edu The most common assumption about Irish fiction is that the Irish are particularly gifted as short-story writers. However, because of Ireland's historically marginal status in relation to England and because of the short story's historically marginal status as a genre, many of the authors covered in this course are, with the exception of James Joyce, neglected in the English curriculum in America, in spite of the fact that many Irish stories are centrally important to the development of Irish fiction in particular and the modern short story in general.

Prudencio De Pereda was born in Brooklyn, New York's Spanish colony on February 18, 1912, to Spanish immigrant parents. He was first encouraged to be a writer after reading Ernest Hemingway as an undergraduate Spanish major at City College of New York (1929-1933). He published his first story in 1936, and during the Spanish Civil War, met Hemingway. The two collaborated on the commentary for the films SPAIN IN FLAMES and THE SPANISH EARTH, espousing the Loyalist Republican viewpoint. During this seminal period of Pereda's writing, his activities brought him into contact with a number of other young New York literati who were similarly affected by the war in Spain and other "radical" causes. During the 1930s and early 1940s, De Pereda wrote short stories that were published in several small circulation magazines, as well as in better-known periodicals such as COMMENTARY, NEW REPUBLIC, STORY, and NATION. De Pereda's stories have been anthologized often, and appeared in the O. HENRY MEMORIAL PRIZE VOLUME (1937) and O'BRIEN'S BEST SHORT STORIES (1938, 1940).
