Almayer's Folly , a story of Malaysia which was written in English, was published in 1895. It should be remembered that the lingua franca at that time was French, which was Conrad's second language, thus it is altogether remarkable that Conrad should write so fluently and effectively in what was his third language. His literary work bridges the gap between the classical literary tradition of writers such as Charles Dickens and Fyodor Dostoevsky and the emergent modernist schools of writing. He is now best known for the novella, Heart of Darkness , on which Francis Ford Coppola's film, Apocalypse Now , is loosely based. Joseph Conrad died of a heart attack and was buried in Canterbury, UK, with three mistakes in his name on the grave-stone. [Adapted from Wikipedia Browse

Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski was born in Ukraine in 1857. His parents, ardent Polish patriots, died when he was a child, after the Tsar had exiled them for their anti-Russian activities.
Then his uncle, Thaddeus Bobrowski, took care of him for the next twenty-five years.
In May 1873, the young Jozef leaves for a three-months-long stay in northern Italy. This is his first view of the sea, and the beginning of a passion. In 1874, after his uncle Thaddeus had finally conceded to his nephew's desire to sail, Conrad went to Marseilles, where he served in French merchant vessels.
His first service, as an apprentice on the Mont-Blanc, brings him to La Martinique. From schooner to schooner, Conrad acquires finally (with three other men) the Tremolino which carries arms illegally to the supporters of Don Carlos, the Spanish pretender, and after attempting to suicide by shooting himself through the chest, he joins a British ship in 1879.
Second mate on the Narcissus, in 1884 he sails to Bombay. Back to England in 1886, he obtains the British citizenship together with a Master's certificate of the British Merchant Service.

    JOSEPH CONRAD
Conrad, Joseph [Korzeniowski, Jozef Teodor Konrad] (1857-1924). Author and merchant seaman. Joseph Conrad was born in Podolia in the Ukraine, the only child of Polish parents, Apollo Korzeniowski and Evelina Bobrowski. Apollo was an ardent literary critic and translator, and introduced his son to many literary works of the time, including Dickens, Marryat, and Fenimore Cooper. The Korzeniowskis were vocal opponents of the Russian involvement in their country; they were exiled to Volgoda in northern Russia after the nationalist insurrection in 1863. Evelina died in Volgoda when Conrad was seven; his father died four years later. Tadeusz Bobrowski, Conrad’s uncle, became a major influence in his life from that point. Always fascinated by life at sea, in 1874, Conrad, aged 17, ran away to Marseilles, against his uncle’s wishes, to begin a 20-year career as a sailor and merchant seaman. Conrad’s literary career began with his first novel, Almayer’s Folly (1895), which he was writing while still a seaman. On the publication of this first novel, Conrad settled in England for the remainder of his life, making his living as an author. Conrad’s first language was Polish; he learned French whilst in the merchant navy. English was in fact his third language, and according to friends he maintained throughout his life a strong Polish accent when speaking the language of his adopted country. Many of Conrad’s early novels and short stories display the influence of his sea-going career on his vision as an author. His most famous work

    Joseph Conrad (1857-1924)
Joseph Conrad Joseph Conrad (originally Jozef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski) was born in the Ukraine in 1857 and grew up under Tsarist autocracy. His parents, ardent Polish patriots, died when he was a child, following their exile for anti-Russian activities, and he came under the protection of his tradition-conscious uncle, Thaddeus Bobrowski, who watched over him for the next twenty-five years. In 1874 Bobrowski conceded to his nephew's passionate desire to go to sea, and Conrad travelled to Marseilles, where he served in French merchant vessels before joining a British ship in 1878. In 1886 he obtained British nationality and his Master's certificate in the British Merchant Service. Eight years later he left the sea to devote himself to writing, publishing his first novel, Almayer's Folly, in 1895. The following year he married Jessie George and eventually settled in Kent, where he produced within fifteen years such modern classics as Youth, Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, Typhoon, Nostromo, The Secret Agent and Under Western Eyes. He continued to write until his death in 1924. Today Conrad is generally regarded as one of the greatest writers of fiction in English - his third language. He once described himself as being concerned `with the ideal value of things, events and people'; in the Preface to The Nigger of the `Narcissus' he defined his task as `by the power of the written word before all, to make you see'. His books often begin as 'yarns' based on sea stories about exotic locations and 'driven' people. He was interested in people whose psychology or circumstances forced then into extreme behaviour, so his plots become an exploration of compulsion, obsession and neurosis.

    Biography
Conrad home Bibliography Annotated Online Index Assignments/Paper Topics Like many "English" writers, Joseph Conrad was not born in Great Britain. He was born in Berdiczew, Polodolia, Poland, on 3 December (or maybe 6 December) 1857. His original name was Jozef Teodor Konrad Nalecz Korzeniowski. His father, Apollonius Nalecz, a writer and political activist, was arrested and imprisoned in 1862, when Joseph Conrad was still a very young child. The family was deported (Conrad later described it as being "condemned to deportation") to northern Russia. Conrad's mother, Evelina (Bobrowski) Korzeniowski, died of tuberculosis in Russia in April 1865. In December 1867, around Conrad's tenth birthday, his father also dying of tuberculosis, they returned to Poland. He was sent to school and came home every night to the house he and his father shared in Cracow. Conrad beautifully described this part of his life many years later: His father died in May 1869, and Joseph Conrad's uncle and grandmother became his guardians. In 1874, when Conrad was still 15, he moved to Marseilles, France, where many Polish expatriates gathered. Instead of adopting the life the intellectual expatriate, however, he joined the French Merchant Marine and travelled to Martinique and the West Indies. Between 1878 and 1890 (ages 19-32 or so), Conrad worked for the British Merchant Service, travelling to many exotic locations including Africa, Australia, India, and the far East.
