Joseph Conrad was born in Berdichev, Poland. Both of his parents died by the age of twelve and, when he was sixteen years old, he left Poland destined for France. He led an adventurous life during this time; he worked on ships running guns. He entered the merchant service of England, becoming a British citizen in 1886. He traveled extensively, including adventures in Malay Archipelago and on the Congo River. Conrad was married in 1895 to Jessie George. He spoke 4 languages(Russian, Polish, French, and English).
Conrad wrote Nostromo in 1904 and Lord Jim in 1900. These two works are his most highly regarded novels. The short story "Heart of Darkness"(1902) is one of the best known tales of the twentieth century. The subject involves the depth of human corruptability set on the African continent.
Conrad died at Bishopsbourne, near Canterbury, in 1924.

The novels Nostromo The Secret Agent Under Western Eyes (1911), and Chance (1913) are regarded by many as Conrad's greatest works. Of his later works, Victory (1915) is the best known. He also collaborated on two novels with Ford Madox Ford The Inheritors (1901) and Romance (1903). Marked by a distinctive, opulent prose style, Conrad's novels combine realism and high drama. Their settings include nautical backgrounds as well as high society, and international politics. Conrad was a skilled creator of atmosphere and character; the impact of various situations was augmented by his use of symbolism. He portrayed acutely the conflict between non-western cultures and modern civilization. His characters exhibit the possibilities for isolation and moral deterioration in modern life. Born Teodor Józef Konrad Korzeniowski near Berdichev, Poland, Conrad was the son of a Polish noble from whom he acquired a love of literature. However, he was orphaned at the age of 12 and at age 16 left Russian-occupied Poland for Marsaille. For the next few years he served on various ships - French and English - becoming a master mariner and, in 1886, a naturalised British subject. He continued travelling widely, especially in Africa and the east. Although English was his fourth language, it was in English that he chose to write, drawing primarily upon these experiences. His first published work, Almayer's Folly , appeared in 1895. Conrad's subsequent life does not appear to have been easy: he received only a small income from his writing, and neither Conrad nor his wife were well. He died at Bishopsbourne, near Canterbury. Much of his writing, or at least the setting, was inspired by his life at sea and in foreign parts, in the decade or so from 1885 to 1895, especially his travels on the Congo River and in the Malay archipelago. "I joined [the ship's company]. It was twenty-two years ago; and I was just twenty. How time passes! It was one of the happiest days of my life. Fancy! Second mate for the first time – a really responsible officer! I wouldn't have thrown up my new billet for a fortune. The mate looked me over carefully. He was also an old chap, but of another stamp. He had a Roman nose, a snow-white, long beard, and his name was Mahon, but he insisted that it should be pronounced Mann. He was well connected; yet there was something wrong with his luck, and he had never got on." —
