Record Round the Isle of Wight Row
From Ryde Rowing Club Early on the morning of Saturday, 19th May, 1999 The Ryde Rowing Club Ladies Fixed Seat Galley Crew met at Ryde Marina to attempt what is believed to be the first Round the Isle of Wight Row by a Women's Crew. The Ryde Club have a strong tradition of Round the Island Rowing having completed at least nine round the Island rows in their 120 year history and currently hold the record in both fixed seat and sliding-seat coastal fours. The row is 55.2 statute miles and for Ryde Crews traditionally start from Ryde Pier head and is rowed west about - Cowes, the Needles, St. Catherine's, Bembridge - and back to Ryde. The record is seven hours, fifty-four minutes in a Sliding seat boat set in 1995. The fastest time in a fixes seat boat is eight hours, six minutes set in 1965. The Fixed Seat Four Oared Galley was loaned by Pat Sherwin, MBE. - an ex. Southsea Rowing Club boat it is a veteran of the Great River Race. Leaving Ryde Pier Head at 4.00am, still in the dark, the crew were accompanied by a Maltese Fishing launch manned by Club Captain Ian Lennie and Crew Member Tony Hickman who was taking the Video and photographic record of the attempt. The launch "Night Owl" owned and skippered by Tony Richardson also accompanied the Crew as Safety cover. Three and a half hours later, by 7.30am, the crew approached the Needles - 21 miles into the row - which provided a spectacular backdrop for the boat with the Wightlink sponsors flag flying behind in the mild head wind.

Children's Authors Birthdays by Name
I found this list on a gopher site and asked the compiler, Donnie Curtis , if I could reproduce it on a Web page. She gave me her permission to do so in February of 1999. There is also a list here monthly by birthday. If you know the birthdate (mm/dd/yyyy) of any other children or YA authors, please let me know and I will add it to the two lists. It might make a great classroom project to find out this information and mail it to me! Thanks for your help!

The Baseball BioProject The Society for American Baseball Research BioProject Committee Mark Okkonen’s “Cup of Coffee” Subjects Marc Okkonen has been researching biographical information, including minor league career paths, for a large group of players who had short careers (usually less than 10 games) between 1900 and 1949. While doing so, he has been jotting down pieces of information that he runs across (post-baseball careers, college attendance, circumstances of death, etc.) He is willing to share any of this with anyone who is researching any of these players. He is also interested in any information you might uncover about any of them, and is especially interested in securing a photo of each of his players. Note: sometimes the first names of the players in this list are different than what the person was generally known as. Marc’s list used their “proper” name in most cases, but about half of these were changed for this list (not by him). The “debut” is in most cases the only year that the person played, and ought to be enough to narrow down who the player was. A huge thanks to Marc for sharing his list with us.

UPDATED VERSION Global Wine Production, Consumption and Trade, 1961 to 2001. A Statistical Compendium,
Kym Anderson and David Norman,
Available in print and CD-ROM versions
Need to know how other exporting countries are doing in your growth markets abroad? Or how wine is competing in the market for alcoholic beverages? Or which countries are most rapidly upgrading the quality of their wine imports? These and a thousand other such questions can now be readily answered with the help of this new statistical compendium.
Among other things it exposes the extent to which the world’s various wine markets are structurally adjusting. Until 15 years ago, wine exporting was an almost exclusively European activity. In the decade to 1985, for example, about 80 per cent of exports came from five European Union members (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Portugal), another 10 per cent came from Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, and a further 8 per cent came from other European countries and the former French colonies of North Africa. Since then, however, California and several southern hemisphere countries (Australia, Argentina, Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand) have begun to challenge that European dominance. Between 1986 and 1999, this new group’s combined share of world wine exports grew from 1.6 to 15 per cent in value terms.
