Return to Susan Fenimore Cooper Notes and Introduction Hugh C. MacDougall
Secretary/Treasurer, James Fenimore Cooper Society "Female Suffrage: A Letter to the Christian Women of America," by Susan Fenimore Cooper, appeared in Harper's New Weekly Magazine , Vol. XLI (JuneNovember, 1870), pp. 438- 446, 594-600. The author is identified only in the Table of Contents, p. v, where she is listed as "Susan F. Cooper." For readers wishing to know the exact location of specific passages, the page breaks from Harper's are identified by a blank line at the end of each page, followed by the original page number at the beginning of the next. The question of "female suffrage" has long been resolved in the United States, andthough sometimes more recentlyin other democratic societies as well. For most people, certainly in the so- called Western world, the right of women to vote on a basis of equality with men seems obvious. A century ago this was not the case, even in America, and it required a long, arduous, and sometimes painful struggle before the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920. Why then, take steps to make available through the Gutenberg Project an article arguing AGAINST the right of women to votean article written by a woman?

Essays on Nature and Landscape
Susan Fenimore Cooper, Edited by Rochelle Johnson and Daniel Patterson. Foreword by John Elder Essays by America's first female nature writer Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813-1894), though often overshadowed by her celebrity father, James Fenimore Cooper, has recently become recognized as both a pioneer of American nature writing and an early advocate for ecological sustainability. Editors Rochelle Johnson and Daniel Patterson have assembled here a collection of ten pieces by Cooper that represent her most accomplished nature writing and the fullest articulation of her environmental principles. With one exception, these essays have not been available in print since their original appearance in Cooper's lifetime. A portrait of her thoughts on nature and how we should live and think in relation to it, this collection both contextualizes Cooper's magnum opus, Rural Hours Rochelle Johnson is an assistant professor of English at Albertson College of Idaho. Daniel Patterson is member of the English faculty at Central Michigan University. Together they have edited Cooper's Rural Hours (Georgia) and Susan Fenimore Cooper: New Essays on "Rural Hours" and Other Works (Georgia). John Elder is Stewart Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College.

"An engaging, astutely, sensitively, and eloquently written work by the first really significant American woman nature writer." Rural Hours
Susan Fenimore Cooper, Edited and with an Introduction by Rochelle Johnson and Daniel Patterson "An engaging, astutely, sensitively, and eloquently written work by the first really significant American woman nature writer."Lawrence Buell Rural Hours (1850) is one of the earliest pieces of American nature writing and the first by a woman. This new edition, the only printing of the full original text since 1876, restores passages excised by the author for an 1887 edition. The daughter of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Fenimore Cooper (1813-1894), uses narratives and descriptions of her walks and excursions to reveal her ideal society as a rural one, carefully poised between the receding wilderness and a looming industrialization. She theorizes that knowledge of place causes people to approach the land humbly and gratefully and asserts the necessity of establishing a society that is sustainable in the natural world and that sees a moral obligation to deepen knowledge of the natural history of the environment. Rochelle Johnson is a doctoral candidate in American literature at the Claremont Graduate University in California. Daniel Patterson is a professor of English at California State University, San Bernardino.
