SUMMER.
FRIDAY, June st. The cedar-birds have been very troublesome among the fruit blossoms, and they are still haunting the gardens. As they always move in flocks, except for a very short period when busy with their young, they leave their mark on every tree they attack, whether in fruit or flower. We saw them last week scattering the petals in showers, to get at the heart of the blossom, which of course destroys the young fruit. They are very much their own enemies, in this way, for no birds are greater fruit-eaters than themselves; they are even voracious feeders when they find a berry to their taste, actually destroying themselves, at times, by the numbers they swallow. The Bohemian wax-wing is rather rare, even in Europe; yet it is believed that a small flock were in our own neighborhood this spring. On two different occasions we remarked what seemed very large cedar-birds without the white line about the eye, and

LATER HOURS.
MAY 25 th. May th. directly over the front door of the house June d. I read and sigh, and wish,
I were a tree,
For sure then I should grow
To fruit or shade; at least,
Some bird would trust
Her household to me,
And I should be just. I hope we shall be just to the poor little robins, and guard them from all dangers, so far as we may. June d. The bee tribe are said to be more numerous than usual. The flowers are full of them. In passing a farm-house we saw one of the pollarded young saplings before the door blackened with a large swarm of honey-bees. A few of the little creatures flew into the carriage as we passed, but without alighting. June th. There is no earthly object with which the human eye is familiar, so full of grandeur, of majesty, and at the same time of tender beauty, and delicate sweetness, as the clouds which float over our heads. "O ye Clouds, bless ye the Lord, praise Him, and magnify Him for ever!"

Early Summer on Staten Island
The Purple Loose-Strife Blooms
From June through early summer, walks in some of Staten Island's numerous wetlands and marsh areas reveal the bright blooms of the Purple Loose-Strife ( Lythrum salicaria ), pictured at left. The Lavender Trail in High Rock Park, which loops around Loose-Strife Pond, takes its name from this plant's colorful Spring flowers. The return of the Loose-Strife blooms raises an issue. While loose-strife is beautifulespecially against the backdrop of black marsh earth and dark green June foliageit is also an introduced plant which is classified in many ecosystems as a noxious weed. It pushes out many other freshwater plant populations, creating a less-diverse ecosystem. Many biologists share their research about the impact of these changes in online sources. To contextualize the place of purple loose-strife in a wetlands ecosystem, visit Freshwater Marshes , part of a course on Soil and Water Conservation Management at Purdue University. The US Department of Agriculture-sponsored study " Disturbance Processes and Ecosystem Management ," (1994, USDA Forest Service), by Robert D. Averill, Louise Larson, Jim Saveland, Philip Wargo, Jerry Williams, Melvin Bellinger, examines the kinds of impacts loose-strife and other introduced flora and fauna can have; "

SPRING.
SATURDAY, March th. Tuesday th. Wednesday th. air , in the light , and in the sky Thursday th. Friday th. Saturday th. Saturday th. Monday th. At this season the sap very frequently moistens the trunk and limbs of sugar maples very plentifully, in spots where there is some crevice through which it makes its way; one often sees it dropping from the branches, and probably the Indians first discovered its sweetness from this habit. One would think that the loss of so much sap would necessarily injure the trees; but it is not so, they remain perfectly healthy, after yielding every spring, gallons of the fluid. Wednesday d. Thursday d. Friday th. Saturday th. Monday th. Tuesday th. Wednesday th. "Wake up into song,
Shaking their choral locks," should make more melody than other trees; the long slender leaves are quivering in the breeze this afternoon like the strings of an instrument, but they are so minute that at a little distance we only remark the general movement of the tufted branches. The whole country is brown again, save here and there a narrow line of snow under some fence on the hills, or a patch marking a drift which all the storms of winter have helped to pile up.

ALBERTSON COLLEGE ENGLISH PROFESSOR CO-EDITS NEW BOOK OF ESSAYS ON AMERICA'S FIRST FEMALE NATURE WRITER CALDWELL, ID – Susan Fenimore Cooper, America's first female nature writer, is the focus of a new book of essays co-edited by Albertson College English professor Rochelle Johnson. "Susan Fenimore Cooper: New Essays on "Rural Hours" and Other Works," a compilation of essays by scholars from across the country, was published recently by the University of Georgia Press. Susan Fenimore Cooper, a writer who lived from 1813-1894, is being reintroduced to today's audiences. Though often overshadowed by her celebrity father James Fenimore Cooper, Susan Fenimore Cooper has become recognized as both a pioneer of American nature writing and an early advocate for ecological sustainability. She is the author of "Rural Hours," a popular book chronicling her thoughts about the natural world she observed in 1850 near her home in Cooperstown, N.Y. The full text of "Rural Hours," which pre-dated Henry David Thoreau's best-selling "Walden" by four years, was out of print until 1998, when it was republished. In their recent book, Johnson and co-editor Daniel Patterson have assembled a collection of detailed essays by scholars who critically examine Cooper's work from several perspectives. The essays illuminate Cooper's positions on conservation, religion and women's place in society as well as study her use of various literary devices such as the picturesque, the literary village sketch and domestic fiction.

Scherenschnitte Design (tea stained and watercolored) by Joan Treis WOODMERE STUDIOS RURAL HOURS I come from an interesting line of German and Irish immigrants therefore I like to combine Celtic and German themes in my artwork and craft. The Rural Hours* spent here at Woodmere inspire each and every project. I enjoy creating Santas and Witches all seen at the Botanical Garden's Best of Missouri's Hands and the Hermann Kristkindl Markt at Stone Hill Winery. I love to read old folk and fairy tales which sometimes inspire my work, such as "Wood Nymph Slippers", Fairy furnishings, a Woodland Fairy House, Garden Angels, and small watercolors of faery world. I enjoy doing collage combined with watercolors, fraktur, watercolored scherenschnitte in Pennsylvania Dutch hand crafted vinegar painted frames, Celtic Fairy Dance shoes, Fairy Furniture & homes, Gravestone rubbings, Santa figures, Decoupage, unique things with quotes, fiber art, quilts, primitive designed stitchery, Santa watercolors, and I am currently working on German folk tale kinder-figures in watercolors. I enjoy "collage" , my own design watercolor necklaces using remnants of old engravings and antique stamps, assemblage boxes, and a just completed "Misty Vineyards" paint chip collage~ done with a collection of sample paints from Alexander Julian colorways. I love creating web designs and had fun designing my own web site for my here in the heart of Missouri Wine Country.
