Marie Corelli (1855-1924)
Biographical Remarks by Eva Fitz
The name Marie Corelli sounds very nice. Marie herself must have thought so when she chose it, instead of Mary Mills or Minnie Mackay. Being not very proud of her past she invented it new. She made herself a different woman altogether, and a younger one, too. I made my first aquaintance with Marie in Stratford-upon-Avon - the appropriate place - in a second hand bookshop. The first thing I was told about her was that she was eccentric and pulled to pieces by her critics. The first novel I read was A Romance of Two Worlds . I was at once struck by her imaginative power. Other novels followed - I confessed myself her admirer and joined the Marie Corelli Fanclub. Unfortunately, I am the only living member. Other members were Queen Victoria (she had a "standing order" for Marie's novels), Queen Alexandra, Sir Frederick Leighton, and many others more. Maybe I am mistaken and other admirers live in Corelli City, Colorado? Marie's origin is somewhat obscured by her own contradictory statements and by speculations on her parentage. Was she the daughter of Elizabeth Mary Mills or a foundling, was Charles Mackay her natural father or her stepfather? Was Mackay's second wife Ellen identical with Elizabeth Mary Mills? Or was Marie Mackay's granddaughter, the child of Rosa Jane Mackay and an Italian? It seems that even Marie herself probably got to know about her true identity only a few weeks after Mackay's death in 1890. She kept that knowledge to herself, though.

MARIE CORELLI (1855-1924) Marie Corelli was the pseudonym of Mary Mackay, a novelist who was born in London on 1 May 1855 as the illegitimate child of Charles Mackay, who was a poet and journalist, and Mary Mills, a servant whom Mackay later married. Corelli began her career as a musician, but soon turned to writing instead and published her first novel, A Romance of Two Worlds , in 1886. Corelli became a best-selling author, and her later writings, such as Thelma: A Society Novel and Barabbas: A Dream of the World's Tragedy , established her as one of the most popular novelists in Britain, whose work often had themes relating to psychic experience and to religion. Corelli lived her adult life with Bertha Vyver. In 1901, Corelli purchased the house, Mason Croft, in Stratford-on-Avon, where they lived until Corelli's death on 21 April 1924.

Marie Corelli
Profile
Novelist, daughter of Charles Mackay, a Scottish poet and song writer. Mary spent her youth in Mickleham, Surrey before moving to London in 1882. She became a talented pianist, using the name Marie Corelli for performances, but turned to writing romantic fiction using the same pseudonym. A romance of two worlds (1886) was her first published novel and she enjoyed popular success from Thelma (1887) onwards, particularly with Barabbas (1893) and The sorrows of Satan (1895). In 1901 she moved to Stratford-upon-Avon , purchasing Mason Croft, a house reputed to have belonged to the daughter of William Shakespeare. Mary Mackay, the person, was somewhat larger than life, as was Marie Corelli, the author. She became a well known figure in the town, entering into local issues with some gusto (see Marie Corelli and the Stratford-upon-Avon controversy ), and had her own gondola on the River Avon. Her knack for drawing attention to herself was coupled with her own self-determination and self-appreciation. Her constant companion, Bertha Vyver, wrote an appreciative memoir which was published in 1940. Her style has been described as over-written exotic romantic fantasy but it was immensely popular, helped by publicity courted by this colourful author. One of her most famous ardent readers was Queen Victoria who seems to have been impressed by the depth to her work. Many critics hated her and the biography written by Thomas Coates and R.S. Warren Bell, published in her lifetime, tries rather too hard to defend her:-

Scholars Index Idol of Suburbia : Marie Corelli and Late-Victorian Literary Culture (Victorian Literature and Culture Series) by Annette Federico Marie Corelli (1855-1924) was the most popular novelist of the turn of the century, outselling Hall Caine, Mrs. Humphry Ward, H. G. Wells, and Arthur Conan Doyle by the thousands. For thirty years she was ridiculed by reviewers and the literary eliteEdmund Gosse dismissed her as "that little milliner"but these opinions had no impact on her mass appeal. In 1895, with The Sorrows of Satan , she broke all previous publishing records, and by 1906 a Corelli novel sold 100,000 copies a year.

"It cannot be denied that 'The Master Christian' is a powerful book; that it is one likely to raise uncomfortable questions in all but the most self-satisfied readers, and that it strikes at the root of the failure of the churchesthe decay of faithin a manner which shows the inevitable disaster heaping up ... The good Cardinal Bonpré is a beautiful figure fit to stand beside the good Bishop in 'Les Misérables.' ... The chapter in which the Cardinal appears with Manuel before Leo XIII. is characterized by extraordinary realism and dramatic intensity....
