Marcus Aurelius, best known for his Meditations on Stoic philosophy, has symbolized for many generations in the West the Golden Age of the Roman Empire. ET01956 Categories Aristotle Computer data (1 file: 83 kb.) The Categories seems to divide roughly into two parts: a division of predications into ten basic kinds or "categories", and a treatment of several important related issues. ET02774 Rhetoric Aristotle Computer data (1 file: 385 kb.) Aristotle analyzes rhetoric in terms of its end, or final, cause, which is persuasion. Like dialectic it is not a science, and therefore it has no specific subject matter, no single method, and no proper set of principles. It is simply the faculty, or power, of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion. According to Aristotle, there are three modes of persuasion that a speaker may exercise: the persuasive power of his own character, the excitation of desired emotions in the audience, and proof or apparent proof.
