Definitions of Gardening and Gardeners
Quotes for Those That Love
Gardens, Gardening, and the Green Way
Compiled by Michael P. Garofalo
As the biocentric view suggests, the garden prospers when control is balanced
by equal measures of humility and benevolence. A balance is struck. Control,
servitude, respect, imagination, pragmatism, an ecological conscience, compliance,
and a certain measure of mysticism and altruism all meld together to provide
nurturance. Try to separate the various aspects into their constituent parts - grant
any one of them the status of fundamental gardening definition and one soon
skews the entire process. Put them back together again in the service of the
two-way street called nurturance, and we express the state of grace called gardening.
- Jim Nollman, Why We Garden: Cultivating a Sense of Place , 1994, p. 106. Let no one think that real gardening is a bucolic and meditative occupation. It is an insatiable passion, like everything else to which a man gives his heart. - Karel Capek I have found, through years of practice, that people garden in order to make

    William and Robert Chambers, Readings in English Poetry: A Collection of Specimens from our best Poets From A.D. 1558 to 1860, Chronologically Arranged with Biographical Notices and Explanatory Notes . (London and Edinburgh: William and Robert Chambers, 1865) Information about the collection: As the full title indicates, there are bio-critical headnotes for each author, with some bibliographic information as well. The contents of the volume are categorized and ordered in three different ways, as follows. The table of contents proper is followed by a "classified index of subjects," which contains these generic categories: sacred-moral-didactic; descriptive (the seasons, months, morning-night, natural phenomena, scenery, characters); historical; satirical; dramatic; miscellaneous narrative; miscellaneous lyrics (odes, songs); and sonnets. Following this is an alphabetical index of poets. There are quasi-baroque engravings of the dates that bound each chronological period before their respective sections in the volume. The names of authors in the TOC are in boldface, as you see here. The Preface: This volume, Readings in English Poetry, forms the poetical part of Readings in English Literature. The prose part is also published separately, under the title of Readings in English Prose. Both volumes are designed as Reading-Books for upper classes in Schools, while the complete work forms a suitable companion to such manuals as the

    ANACREONTIQUES 1. Drinking These poems provide an example of Ancreontics in English poetry.
    The thirsty earth soaks up the rain,
    And drinks and gapes for drink again;
    The plants suck in the earth, and are
    With constant drinking fresh and fair;
    The sea itself (which one would think
    Should have but little need of drink)
    Drinks twice ten thousand rivers up
    So fill'd that they o'erflow the cup.
    The busy Sun (and one would guess
    By 's drunken fiery face no less) Drinks up the sea, and when he 's done, The Moon and Stars drink up the Sun: They drink and dance by their own light, They drink and revel all the night: Nothing in Nature 's sober found, But an eternal health goes round. Fill up the bowl, then, fill it high, Fill all the glasses there—for why Should every creature drink but I? Why, man of morals, tell me why? An English poet, Abraham Cowley was born in London. A child of remarkable talent, at age 10 he wrote an epic poem, Pyramus and Thisbe. He was educated at Oxford and Cambridge universities and is chiefly remembered for his Pindarique Odes

    Osborne House (see OSBORNE), built in 1845 after the property had been purchased by Queen Victoria, the church of St Mildred, Whippingham, lying a mile to the south. The word “cowl” is also applied to a hood-shaped covering to a chimney or ventilating shaft, to help down-draught, and to clear the up-current of foul air (see VENTILATION). another dramatic work, The Guardian, which was acted before the royal visitor with much success. During the civil war this play was privately performed at Dublin, but it was not printed till I 650. It is bright and amusing, in the style common to the “sons” of Ben Jonson, the university wits who wrote more for the closet than the public stage. And make the coming age my own?” It contains elegies on Wotton, Vandyck, Falkland, William Elervey and Crashaw, the last two being among Cowley’s finest poems, brilliant, sonorous and original; the amusing ballad of The Chronicle, giving a fictitious catalogue of his supposed Imours; various gnomic pieces; and some charming paraphrases from Anacreon. The Pindarique Odes contain weighty Lines and passages, buried in irregular and inharmonious masses Df moral verbiage. Not more than. one or two are good throughDut, but a full posy of beauties may easily be culled from them. The long cadences of the Alexandrines with which most of the ftrophes close, continued to echo in English poetry from Dryden -lown to Gray, but the Odes themselves, which were found to be )bscure by the poet’s contemporaries, immediately fell into lisesteem. The Mistress was the most popular poetic reading of the age, and is now the least read of all Cowley’s works. It was Lhe last and most violent expression of the amatory affectation of ±e i7th century, an affectation which had been endurable in Donne and ot~ier early writers because it had been the vehicle of ;incere emotion, but ~ras unendurable in Cowley because in him it represented nothing but a perfunctory exercise, a mere exhibition Df literary calisthenics. He appears to have been of a cold, or at Least of a timid, disposition; in the face of these elaborately Irotic volumes, we are told that to the end of his days he nevef summoned up courage to speak of love to a single woman in real life. The “Leonora” of The Chronicle is said to have been the
