Singing in the Dark William Cowper (Article published in Grapevine - April / May 2000) This month, April 2000, sees the two hundredth anniversary of the death of the poet and hymn writer, William Cowper, who had a small but significant connection with our church. Cowper was a sensitive character and suffered bouts of depression and even madness. As his melancholy increased, in 1763 his brother John, on whom he was dependent, placed him into the care of Dr Nathaniel Cotton of St Albans. Dr Cotton ran a private hospital in his house known as the Collegium Insonorum which stood on the corner of what is now College Street and Lower Dagnall Street. Dr Cotton was a great friend of Dr Samuel Clark, the minister of the chapel in Dagnall Lane where our predecessors met before our present building was erected. Another friend of Dr Cotton was the hymn writer, Philip Doddridge, also a member of the Dagnall Lane Chapel. William Cowper stayed in St Albans for about eighteen months. His stay must have been profitable, for his biographer William Hayley writes of his time with Dr Cotton, "His ideas of religion were changed from the gloom of terror and despair to the lustre of comfort and delight. This juster and happier view of evangelical truth is said to have arisen in his mind while he was reading Romans chapter 3." Hutchinson's encyclopaedia puts it plainly: "He ... sufffered a mental breakdown in 1763 and entered an asylum where he underwent an evangelical conversion."

Contact us The Cowper and Newton Museum William Cowper 1731-1800 Brief Biography William Cowper was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, the son of the Reverend John Cowper and Ann, daughter of Roger Donne of Ludham Hall, Norfolk. On leaving school, Cowper was articled to a solicitor and at the age of 23 was called to the Bar. As a result of severe depression, he had to abandon his profession. His gradual recovery coincided with the beginning of his conversion to Christian evangelicism. Cowper found lodging in Huntingdon, with the Reverend Morley Unwin, his wife Mary and his family. After the Reverend Unwin was killed in a riding accident in 1767, Cowper continued to board with Mary and her family.

William Cowper, English poet, was born at his father's rectory at Great Berkhampstead on 15 November 1731. He was educated at Westminster College and called to the bar in 1754. Following a spell of mental instability, bouts of which were to plague him for the rest of his life, he went to live at Huntingdon with the Revd. Morely Unwin, his wife, Mary (b. 1724) and their son William, who by then was away from home. On the death of Unwin, Mary moved to Olney in Buckinghamshire with Cowper. The curate in Olney, John Newton, collaborated with Cowper in the writing of the Olney Hymns (1779) after which he moved to London. November 1731 in Great Berkhamstead bei Watford (Hertfordshire) geboren. Zeit seines Lebens litt er unter Depressionen, die von Existenzängsten und religiösem Zweifel herrührten. Nach einem Aufenthalt in einer psychiatrischen Klinik lebte Cowper bei dem evangelischen Geistlichen Morley Unwin und dessen Frau Mary in Huntingdon . Nach Unwins Tod 1767 zog er mit dem Rest der Familie nach Buckinghamshire . 1779 erschienen seine gemeinsam mit dem Geistlichen John Newton verfaßten "Olney Hymns" (1779), die später teils als Kirchenlieder vertont wurden. 1782 veröffentlichte Cowper mit "Poems" einen Zyklus von acht satirischen Dichtungen . William Cowper William Cowper (pronounced Cooper , English poet. Cowper suffered attacks of insanity throughout his life, and sought either treatment or retirement in an asylum early in his life. There he became interested in the predestinarian theology of John Calvin , and became devoted to evangelical Christianity. In he moved to Olney, where he wrote The Olney Hymns with the evangelical preacher John Newton. The project was interrupted by another attack of insanity, during which he was convinced of his irrevocable damnation a sense he describes in his last important poem, "The Cast-Away." In he published his most famous work, The Task , a long poem in six books. Wollstonecraft quotes from The Task in A Vindication A patriot's blood, Well spent in such a strife, may earn indeed, And for a time ensure, to his lov'd land, The sweets of liberty and equal laws; But martyrs struggle for a brighter prize, And win it with more pain. Their blood is shed In confirmation of the noblest claim To walk with God, to be divinely free, To soar, and to anticipate the skies! Yet few remember them.
