'THE MIND'S IMPRESSION TOO ON EVR'Y FACE' COWPER (WILLIAM, 1731-1800, poet ) WASH EN GRISAILLE PORTRAIT OF COWPER AFTER GEORGE ROMNEY, depicting Cowper head and shoulders, three quarters turned to the right, wearing the lace cap which Lady Hesketh had given him, signed and dated round the lower right-hand corner 'M.B. 23rd Sept 1808' and lettered in capitals in the lower margin 'Cowper', overall size including margins 10 x 8 inches, mounted on an album leaf with printed ephemera on the verso, 23 September 1808 This attractive if stylised copy of Romney's famous crayon portrait of Cowper was made only eight years after the poet's death. The original was painted in 1792 at the instigation of William Hayley and occasioned Cowper's sonnet 'Romney! expert infallibly to trace...'. Hayley recorded that Romney's portrait was so successful that 'spectators who contemplated the portrait with the original at its side, thought it hardly possible for any similitude to be more striking, or more exact...Romney himself considered his portrait of Cowper as the nearest approach that he had ever made to a perfect representation of life and character.' Romney's portrait was engraved in 1802 by Hayley's protégé William Blake who also based on it his own tempera painting of Cowper.

William Cowper 1731-1800 (also see: an account of Cowper's mother's death and John Newton's sermon at Cowper's funeral Cowper and Newton were inseparable, Cowper becoming in effect “the Curate’s curate.” Newton recognized Cowper’s literary talents and had his individual poems published. He wrote the preface to the first edition of his collection, Poems. Cowper acknowledged, “The honor of your preface prefixed to my poems will be on my side; for surely to be known as the friend of a much-favored minister of God’s word is a more illustrious distinction, in reality, than to have the friendship of any poet in the world to boast of.” When Cowper showed signs of returning depression Newton suggested they work together on providing hymns for the weekly meetings. This gesture of friendship resulted in many hymns grounded in prayer and scripture which still give much encouragement and incentive to worship today, two hundred years later, all over the world. Cowper visited the sick and took a special interest in the welfare of the lace-makers. He sometimes led at the church prayer meetings. Samuel Teedon, the village schoolmaster, considered, “Of all the men I ever heard pray, no one equaled Mr. Cowper.” Newton s testimony to him in his

William Cowper
English poet. The simplicity of his work and his treatment of natural subjects was in marked contrast to the sophistication of the fashionable Pope; he was an important forerunner of the Romantics, and his unfinished poem 'Yardley Oak' was particularly admired by Wordsworth. Other notable poems include 'The Poplar Trees', 'The Journey of John Gilpin' and 'The Castaway', while The Task is his most ambitious work in verse. Olney Hymns (1779) contains his popular hymns 'God moves in a mysterious way' and 'Oh, for a closer walk with God'. His autobiographical Memoir was published in 1816, and his letters have been widely appreciated, providing an intimate picture of the man.

William Cowper
William Cowper was the son of a Hertfordshire rector and was educated at a local boarding school and Westminster School. He studied law at the Inner Temple in London, but never practised it as a career. He suffered from depression all his life and his mental health was fragile. The strain on his mind was increased by his father's decision to ban him from marrying his first love, his cousin Theodora Cowper.
In 1763 the prospect of an examination for a job in the House of Lords caused a mental breakdown and he attempted suicide. He was nursed back to health by a clergyman, Morley Unwin, and his wife Mary. Cowper stayed with the Unwins and became engaged to Mary after Morley's death. His worsening mental condition made marriage impossible, but they remained close friends.
Cowper's state of mind was not improved by the company of the curate John Newton, a gloomy Calvinist. Under Newton's influence, Cowper came to believe that he was destined for eternal damnation, and in 1773 he suffered another attack of madness. Although his association with Newton produced the book Olney Hymns (1779), it can hardly be described as a fruitful partnership for Cowper, and his health improved when the preacher left for London.
Encouraged by Mary Unwin, Cowper wrote a series of moral satires which were published in Poems (1782), and his happier frame of mind at this time can be seen in poems such as 'Retirement ' and 'Conversation'. Another friend, the widow Lady Austen, provided the story for the ballad 'The Journey of John Gilpin', as well as the initial idea which Cowper developed into The Task.
