VERSES SUPPOSED TO BE WRITTEN BY ALEXANDER SELKIRK This is the full text of the poem of which the first stanza is shown in the Glossary to illustrate the term, scan. It also provides an example of anapestic feet and the second stanza begins with an apostrophe.
I am monarch of all I survey,
My right there is none to dispute;
From the center all round to the sea
I am lord of the fowl and the brute. O solitude! where are the charms
That sages have seen in thy face?
While anapestic trimeter is the prevailing metrical pattern of this poem, only 20 of the 56 lines are fully anapestic; 36 lines begin with an iambic foot. Better dwell in the midst of alarms
Than reign in this horrible place. I am out of humanity's reach.
I must finish my journey alone,
Never hear the sweet music of speech;
I start at the sound of my own. The beasts that roam over the plain My form with indifference see; They are so unacquainted with man, Their tameness is shocking to me. Born in Scotland in 1676, Alexander Selkirk ran away to sea when he was nineteen. In 1704, during a privateering expedition to plunder Spanish shipping off the Pacific coast of South America, he became concerned over the seaworthiness of their ship. After a quarrel with the captain, he asked to be put ashore on the Juan Fernandez islands, about 400 miles off the coast of Chile. Selkirk remained alone on the island for four years and four months, until finally rescued by an English vessel in 1709.

COWPER, WILLIAM
only woman he ever loved, and she married the brother of his biographer, Sprat. Soon after his return to England he was seized in mistake for another person, and only obtained his liberty on a bail of £1000. In 1658 he revised and altered his play of The Guardian, and prepared it for the press under the title of The Cutter of Coleman Street, but it did not appear until 1663. Late in 1658 Oliver Cromwell died, and Cowley took advantage of the confusion of affairs to escape to Paris, where he remained until the Restoration brought him back in Charles’s train. He published in 1663 Verses upon several occasions, in which The Complaint is included. Throughout their parallel lives the fame of Cowley completely eclipsed that of Milton, but posterity instantly and finally reversed the judgment of their contemporaries. The poetry of Cowley rapidly fell into a neglect as unjust as the earlier popularity had been. As a prose writer, especially as an essayist, he holds, and will not lose, a high position in literature; as a poet it is hardly possible that he can enjoy more than a very partial revival. The want of nature, the obvious and awkward art, the defective melody of his poems, destroy the interest that their ingenuity and occasional majesty would otherwise excite. He had lofty views of the mission of a poet and an insatiable ambition, but his chief claim to poetic life is the dowry of sonorous lyric style which he passed down to Dryden and his successors of the 18th century.

The Task
That lean hard-handed poverty inflicts,
The hope of better things, the chance to win,
The wish to shine, the thirst to be amused,
Unpeople all our counties, of such herds
Of fluttering, loitering, cringing, begging, loose
And wanton vagrants, as make London, vast
And boundless as it is, a crowded coop.
Oh thou resort and mart of all the earth,
And spotted with all crimes; in whom I see Much that I love, and more that I admire, And all that I abhor; thou freckled fair That pleases and yet shocks me, I can laugh And I can weep, can hope, and can despond, Feel wrath and pity, when I think on thee! Ten righteous would have saved a city once, That salt preserves thee; more corrupted else, And therefore more obnoxious at this hour

Olney has historical associations with the poet William Cowper (1731 - 1800) and John Newton (1725 - 1807). William Cowper lived in Orchard House, which is now the Cowper and Newton Museum, between 1768 and 1786. John Newton became curate of Olney's Parish Church between 1764 and 1800. They are both commemorated in the Cowper and Newton Museum in the Market Place. Together they wrote the 380 hymns that make up "The Olney Hymn Book". Best known are: 'How sweet the name of Jesus sounds', 'Glorious things of these are spoken' and 'Amazing Grace' by John Newton and '0 for a closer walk with God', 'Hark my soul it is the Lord' and 'God moves in a mysterious way', by William Cowper. John Newton, after trading in slaves between Africa and America, was converted to the Christian faith (inspiring him to write the famous hymn 'Amazing Grace') and was ordained a priest. His remarkable ministry bought large crowds to Olney to hear him preach from the pulpit that is now preserved in the Church. Page created January 12, 1998

Osbeck's 101 Hymn Stories #95 Hymn Title: There Is a Fountain Hymn Author: William Cowper, 1731-1800 Hymn Tune: Cleansing Fountain Hymn Music: American Melody Hymn Meter: Scripture Reference: Zechariah 13:1 Text: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:13 William Cowper (pronounced "Kooper") is a name highly respected in English classic literary circles. He is the most honored poet between Pope and Shelley and is viewed by some as one of the finest of all English writers. Several of his best known secular works include a translation of Homer, a widely acclaimed volume of poems entitled The Task, along with his most famous literary poem, "John Gilpin," a happy and mirthful narrative. Cowper was born in Great Berkhamstead, England, on November 15, 1731. His father was an English clergyman while his mother was from a well-known family of royalty. Throughout his childhood Cowper was physically frail and emotionally sensitive. Contributing to his instability was the death of his mother when he was only six years old. Near the end of his life he once remarked that there had never been a day when he had not mourned his mother's death.
