CRAFT, 37, wife of Guy CRAFT of Valley street, McDonald died at 5:40 o'clock Monday morning, February 23, 1931, in the Canonsburg General hospital, succumbing after an operation. Mrs. CRAFT, a daughter of the late Sebastian TRAUTMAN and his wife Mrs. TRAUTMAN of Valley street, McDonald, was born on the McDonald farm north of McDonald. She was united in Marriage with GUY CRAFT in 1927 and had since made her home in McDonald. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian church of McDonald. Mrs. CRAFT leaves her husband, her mother, and the following brothers and sisters: John TRAUTMAN of Imperial, Henry TRAUTMAN of Coraopolis, Mrs. George EHLE of Imperial, Mrs. George GOSS of Carnot, Mrs. E. J. LINK of Coraopolis, and Mrs. Mary UHRINE of Coraopolis. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the family home in Valley street, in charge of the Rev. S. A. MCCOLLAM. A quarter of a century ago,William and I were slaves in the state of Georgia.Us, and thousands of others, had a desire to be free.For this we were willing to make any sacrafice, or to endure any amount of suffering. In this state of mind we commenced planning. After thinking of various ways that might be tried, it occured to us , that one might act the part of a master and the other as a slave. I dressed as the master and William as the slave. I needed a beard so I acted like I had a tooth ace and William acted like he had a broken arm and wore a cast.As time passed we went through the Underground Railroad. After that we stopped at a first-class hotel in Charleston. Then we stopped at a simular hotel in Richmond. We new we must pass through Baltimore, but we didn't know the obstacles. Finally, we arrived in Philly.On our trip a few people gave a few tips on where to go. But we were still scared we would get caught by our masters because of a Fugitive Slave Act that was new. This is where if any slave was caught in a free coutry they would get sent back to their masters. For four days, she convinced ticket agents, guards, and fellow passengers that she was a white gentleman travelling north for medical treatment. Her husband went with her as her slave. Ellen's daring act brought her and her husband to Philadelphia and to a future in the abolitionist movement. Summerville Hudson Vachel Craft (1804-1866) m. Mary Payne (1810-1872) Thomas Craft married Summerville Hudson in 1823, Surry Co., NC (she was born in VA about 1803). Vachel Craft (1804-1866) married Mary Payne in Davidson County NC in 1828. Both are buried at Sharon Methodist Church, Forsyth County, as is Mary Payne Craft. In 1880 Summerville Craft, widow of Thomas, is living next to Vachel's son Stephen W. Craft. Vachel's sons Albert and Junius Craft were witnesses to Thomas Craft's will. For the young black slave woman, freedom was worth masquerading as a white man. And once the rest of her people were free, Ellen Craft came back to help educate them in Georgia, the land of her bondage. The story of Ellen Craft and her husband, William, is not often retold. That's a shame, says Anita Ponder, assistant director of Macon's Tubman African American Museum, which maintains an Ellen Craft exhibit. Ellen and William Craft lived in, got married in and escaped from antebellum Macon. They became famous on two continents, disputing those who tried to downplay the evils of slavery. "It's a wonderful story, and she should be a woman of national interest," Ponder said. The museum plans to expand its Craft exhibit when it moves to a new facility in downtown Macon next year.Craft was born in the Jones County, Ga., town of Clinton in 1826, the daughter of a white cotton planter and his slave mistress. Her light skin was a source of consternation to the plantation mistress, and when Ellen was 11, she was given to the planter's legitimate daughter. She was taken to Macon to live as a slave on the estate of the white daughter's new husband, Dr. Robert Collins, who held himself out to be an enlightened master.William Craft was owned by a man who enjoyed a reputation as a fine Christian, but who didn't think twice about selling William's elderly parents to separate buyers or of selling William and his brother and sister to raise money for a speculative investment in cotton futures.
