Ellen and William Craft achieved notoriety after their dramatic and daring escape from slavery in Georgia in 1848. As part of their escape plan, Ellen had successfully posed as a white male Southern planter. By 1850, the Crafts were living in Hammersmith, London. The Crafts subsequently published a book about their dramatic escape to freedom. The book is titled Running A Thousand Miles For Freedom. and was initially published in London in 1860. Following the Civil War, the Crafts eventually returned to Georgia with three of their five children. Two of their grandchildren, Henry Craft and William Monroe Trotter, graduated from Harvard University around the turn of the (last) century. Ellen and William Craft were my (great, great, great) grandparents. Welcome to Heirloom Embroidery! I want to thank you for visiting this area of my web site and for your interest in my work. I consider myself very fortunate to be able to do what I love as a chosen career, but I also realize that if I don't tell you a little about me then you won't understand what makes my company special and different from the hundreds of other needlework designers out there. So here goes... I have worn many different hats as a needle artist: designer, author, teacher, shop owner, and enthusiastic stitcher. My company, Ellen Moore Johnson Designs , supplies the hobby/craft industry with embroidery products that have a worldwide distribution. I have published articles and designed projects for Craft and Needlework Age, Creative Needle, Decorating Digest, Fancywork, Great American Crafts, Handcraft Illustrated, Memory Magic, Sew Beautiful, and Stitcher's World. My teaching experience includes instructing both adults and children in the following types of needlework: surface embroidery, silk ribbon embroidery, fine hand sewing, needlepoint, cross-stitch, and quilting. I was a partner in a retail needlework shop for several years before I sold my portion of the business to pursue a full-time career in the design and marketing of embroidery products. My memberships in pertinent organizations include the Embroiderer's Guild of America, the American Needlepoint Guild, The National Needlework Association, the International Needleart Retailers Guild, the Society of Craft Designers, and the Hobby Industry Association. So you see, needlework is not just something that I do-it's a part of who I am.

Ellen and Reed
Ellen Lebitz and Reed Braden have been exploring bookbinding and book arts for 15 and 11 years respectively. Ellen grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She has a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Art, and became interested in bookbinding and book arts as a printmaker. Her lithographs are narrative in nature, and it was her desire to bind her own work that led her to the craft of bookbinding. She has a personal interest in historic bookbinding types and contemporary uses of those types. Reed grew up in the Northwest. He created many artist's books while earning his undergraduate degree in Art. In 1993 he received a grant for a book arts project to make books based on an experience hiking Vancouver Island, using alternative materials such as glass, paint, and clay. He came to bookbinding as a craft, first as an apprentice to Ellen, and then as a full partner in the business they started together. Ellen and Reed live in Bellingham, Washington with their new son Thomas Aster, their cat Kitty, and their dog Balthus.

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. William and Ellen Craft's daring escape from slavery in 1848 made them famous throughout antebellum America, heroes in the eyes of abolitionists and criminals in the eyes of slavery supporters. The unusual circumstances of their flight to freedom were a major factor in their celebrity. Ellen, so light-skinned as to be nearly white, disguised herself in men's clothing and posed as a young white planter to effect her escape. Her husband, William, played the role of her slave. Together, they traveled from Georgia to Philadelphia by train and by boat, often staying in first-class accommodations and always directly under the noses of southern authorities. Americans everywhere were moved by their amazing story of boundary crossing, for the Crafts passed through not only the literal boundary that separated North from South, but also the social boundaries of race, class, and gender that divided the population of the United States.
