ELLEN BERG
Diary #8 Why Our Character Sketch Unit Worked
This past week ended my character sketch unit. Thursday and Friday all the boys and girls were adding their finishing touches, asking last minute questions, and handing in their stories for evaluation. Though I felt pretty confident that students were understanding and applying what we had been learning about in class, I have discovered you do not really know until the papers are sitting in front of you. There have been times I have flipped through students' work in disbelief, crying, "Certainly somebody understood?" Fortunately, this time the results were overwhelmingly positive. Most of my students learned what I taught. It's time to do the happy dance. There is, of course, a range of mastery among my students. I have students who go beyond the criteria with their descriptions of characters' physical features, facial expressions and gestures and have meaty, realistic dialogue. Everything is not only included in the piece, but it also flows seamlessly through the paper. On the other end of the spectrum, I have students who did not integrate these ideas as smoothly, but it is obvious they were trying to apply those aspects of writing craft to their own writing. It is clear they understood the concepts, though they are limited in their writing background and other facets of craft. It is a success in my eyes.

84. Ellen Kushner And Delia Sherman - An Appreciation By Terri Windling
Like Ellen, she made a name for herself quite rapidly, demonstratinga maturity and mastery of Craft in her very first published works.
http://www.endicott-studio.com/intedtw.html
I first met Ellen many years ago, as I was entering the New York publishing field just as she was leaving it bravely quitting an editorial job at Simon & Schuster in order to write. She locked herself away in a rambling old apartment on the Upper West Side (with a crumbling Renaissance atmosphere that would not be out of place in "Riverside"), and emerged with Swordspoint a novel which is now a modern classic of the speculative fiction field. Our friendship grew over several years as we discovered we shared a taste not only for old folk tales, folk music and myths, but for black leather jackets, David Bowie and Prince, and the glam street culture of Eighties-era New York. When I left a long-term relationship and found myself with nowhere to live, Ellen invited me into that Riverside-like apartment of hers for a period of time that proved to be enormously creative for us both. Many of the projects we've worked on since began with our kitchen table conversations lounging about in vintage-store lingerie; drinking endless cups of coffee, or scotch; spinning dreams, ideas, and fantasies to be captured upon the page. The seeds for Ellen's award-winning novel Thomas the Rhymer were planted there; and my "adult fairy tale" anthology series; and Borderland; and other stories and projects that would emerge in the years to come.

Typhoon Ellen (8309)
29 August - 9 September 1983
(extracted from the Observatory's Publication
"Meteorological Results 1983, Part III - Tropical Cyclone Summaries")
The track of this typhoon is shown in Figures 1 and T yphoon Ellen was the worst typhoon to strike Hong Kong since Typhoon Hope in 1979. It passed about 7 nautical miles southwest of Fan Lau, the southwestern tip of Lantau lsland. 10 people were killed and 12 were missing. The Hurricane Signal, No. 10, was hoisted for a duration of 8 hours, which was the same as during Typhoon Wanda in 1962. Hurricane force winds lasted for 5 hours at Cheung Chau. This was a longer duration than in Typhoon Wanda in 1962, Typhoon Hope in 1979 or Typhoon Rose in 1971 as a result of Ellen's track and its relatively slow movement. The highest gust over Hong Kong, 134 knots, was recorded at Stanley. A maximum gust of 128 knots was recorded at Cheung Chau, which was the highest gust there since 1953. At Waglan lsland, the maximum gust of 122 knots was the highest since Typhoon Ruby of 1964. (I) (II) Figure 1. Track of Typhoon Ellen (8309) : 29 August - 9 September.

Her creations include gem stones, glass beads, cameos, dichroic glass, and semiprecious stones. gold filled wire. Ellen Glynn has been artistically inclined for many years, having been involved in stained glass since 1981 as a hobby. She became interested in wirecraft during a workshop held by Glass Crafters in N.J. There she learned to use a kiln for glass fusing and basic wire wrapping techniques taught by John Smith and Linda Abbott. That was the beginning of her addiction to creating wire sculpted jewelry. She has continued her learning skills in wire sculpture from the video workshop for professional wire workers , by
Preston J. Reuther, Master Wire Sculptor
, and from a beautifully illustrated monthly magazine, The Wire Artist Jeweller. Ellen graduated from Nursing School in 1970 and continues to work part time in the health field. After doing her first craft show, she realized that there was alot of interest in her jewelry designs and she began to concentrate more towards a wire artist career. Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood

Raised in a home with an abusive, emotionally distant father, journalist Leonard Pitts Jr. didn't know where to turn for guidance when raising his own son. Pitts interviewed dozens of black men across America to pose this question to them. The result is an honest portrait of black fatherhood that offers much food for thought. I Was Born A Slave
By Yuval Taylor (Editor) Foreword by Charles Johnson This book offers a comprehensive investigation into the eroding progress of these women in the U.S. labor market. This book documents how race and gender intersect to especially disadvantage black and Latina women.
