William Norris
[Designs in Iron]
William Norris has a love affair with New Orleans fine iron furniture. Whether a baker’s rack or a four poster bed, whether a table or touchier, a stool or console, William sees it in iron. Forging, casting, bending and hammering he delivers dramatically creative shapes, yet always appreciating the esthetics of a straight line. Cast iron pieces of the highest quality provide fanciful elements. The best wrought iron, hammered to purity, renders strength and appeal. Castings, parts and components in bronze and brass accent the pieces. For thirteen years customers keep coming for more. “Design is my forte,” William observed, “taking a client’s personal interests, esthetics, and environment as the rubric of creation produces something new and unique. My clients are my design motif. Their spaces, their tastes, their décor and their activities direct the shape of a piece.” For thirteen years William has been creating quality iron furniture for a select clientele in New Orleans and other sophisticated markets. William is available for custom consultations.

Update: In an e-mail dated June 8, 2001 Henry Land identified the parents of Thomas and Vachel Craft as Nathan Craft and Betsey Cooper. Henry is a direct descendant of Nannie Ellen Craft. Henry's e-mail address is: hland@vnet.net First Generation: Children of Nathan Craft and Betsy Cooper
Thomas Craft (1802-1869) m. Summerville Hudson
Vachel Craft (1804-1866) m. Mary Payne (1810-1872) Thomas Craft married Summerville Hudson in 1823, Surry Co., NC (she was born in VA about 1803). Vachel Craft (1804-1866) married Mary Payne in Davidson County NC in 1828. Both are buried at Sharon Methodist Church, Forsyth County, as is Mary Payne Craft. In 1880 Summerville Craft, widow of Thomas, is living next to Vachel's son Stephen W. Craft. Vachel's sons Albert and Junius Craft were witnesses to Thomas Craft's will. All these associations suggest a close family connection. Second Generation Children of Thomas Craft and Summerville Hudson
Richard L. Craft (1824-1893) m. Jincy C. Harper

    Dr. William Bertelsen
Dr. William R. Bertelsen is a great transportation inventor and visionary. He pioneered the creation of hovercraft (air cushion vehicles) in the 1950s, continued working in the decades since to perfect them with his Gimbal Fan, and recently laid the ground for a wonderful future of transportation with his Aeromobile-Aeroduct System.
Special Presentations Audio: Interview with Dr. Bertelsen - streaming audio of Dr. Bertelsen relating his early years of pioneering research.
What has Dr. Bertelsen Done for Transportation? Dr. William Bertelsen is a medical doctor who also has an engineering background. Starting in the mid 1950s, Dr. Bertelsen was inspired by the experimental research done on vertical take-off aircraft to come up with the concept of an air cushion vehicle (a term he prefers, although the more common term is hovercraft). This is a vehicle that rides over any surface by creating a cushion of air. This air cushion enables the craft to hover above the ground and move in any desired direction. It has many advantages over wheeled vehicles, including being amphibious, not dependent on road surfaces and useable in many different terrain and weather conditions. Since his medical practice at the time was rural, he wanted to use such a machine to travel to his remote rural patients regardless of the weather. Dr. Bertelsen built an early prototype of a hovercraft vehicle in 1959 (called Aeromobile 35-B), and was photographed by a photographer from
