Crawford's Notch?
North Country Reference
Prompts Threat of Horsewhipping
The artist was John Singer Sargent (1840-1924)
The portrait is now displayed at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston (otherwise known as Fenway Court). "Mrs. Jack" Gardner amassed an art collection noted for its daring and taste. A New York native, she enjoyed tweaking the sensibilities of Boston's somewhat ossified cultural elite. Isabella Stewart Gardner commissioned the portrait in 1888 when she was 48. Mrs. Jack put her best foot forward. Well, maybe not her foot... The word around Boston was:
You can see nearly all the way down to Crawford's Notch!
Mr. Jack Gardner threatened to horsewhip any scoundrel who made any reference to "Crawford's Notch." He also forbid public exhibition of the portrait.* * Isabella exhibited it after Jack's death. Underclassmen still flock to Fenway Court for a glimpse of "Crawford's Notch." THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY:
The tabloids relished the "Crawford's Notch" reference, because Mrs. Jack was, at that time, mentoring the novelist Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909), a young man with whom Mrs. Gardner had formed an intimate (though likely chaste) attachment.

Timeline of Positive New Thought and Positive Thinking Authors
Belief in the human spirit, in oneself and in the process of life are the basic tenets of New Thought and Positive Thinking literature. The basic theory is that the stories we tell ourselves determine how our lives will go.
Authors are listed in the order of their first book's earliest known date of publication. Many titles are linked to Amazon.com. Click on the title to read more detailed descriptions. You can also look up the authors at Mlvyl, the University of California library database: click here for Mlvyl . Here's a Positive Thought
American mystic Vernon Howard (1918 - 1992) taught us that pictures communicate large amounts of data to the mind. He gave us Psycho-Pictography: The New Way to Use the Miracle Power of Your Mind (1965). The book offers dozens of healing pictures. Following is an example of a healing psycho-pictograph. Contemplate this story whenever you're afraid of a person who abuses power.
"Suppose you see a tiger in a zoo. Now, you know very well that this tiger is a cruel and vicious animal. He would destroy you if he could. You understand his ferocity, yet you are unafraid of him; his cruelty does not alarm you. Why are you fearless? Because you know he is powerless to harm you. The bars protect you. Fables
Fables take off from the severity of instruction, and enforce at the same time that they conceal it. = Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) English essayist The virtue, which we gather from a fable or an allegory, is like the health we get by hunting, as we are engaged in an agreeable pursuit that draws us on with pleasure, and makes us insensible of the fatigues that accompany it. = Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) English essayist The fable is allegorical; its actions are natural, but its agents imaginary. The tale is fictitious, but not imaginary, for both its agents and actions are drawn from the passing scenes of life. Tales are written mainly for amusement, fables for instruction. = George Crabbe (1754 - 1832) English poet Fables, like parables, are more ancient than formal arguments and are often the most effective means of presenting and impressing both truth and duty. =

In all human affairs there are efforts, and there are results, and the strength of effort is the measure of the results. = James Allen (1849 - 1925) American novelist Any man can work when every stroke of his hand brings down the fruit rattling from the tree to the ground; but to labor in season and out of season, under every discouragement, by the power of truth - that requires a heroism, which is transcendent. = Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 87) American clergy Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never, never - in nothing great and small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense. = PRESS ON. - Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing in the world is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. = Calvin Coolidge (1872 - 1938) 30th President U. S.
