Michael A. Bellesiles: Mega Anti-Gun-Nut Part VI
by
Larry Pratt
In a glowing, sycophantic review of Professor Michael A. Bellesiles' book Arming America: The Origins Of A National Gun Culture (Alfred A. Knopf, 2000), in the New York Times Book Review (9/10/2000), Gary Wills hails this wretched work saying that it "has dispersed the darkness that covered the gun's early history in America." But this is hogwash. If ever there was a book that sheds more dark than light on a subject, it is what this "Nutty Professor" has written. Almost any book you browse in, at random, contains information blatantly at odds with Bellesiles' assertion that before the War Between the States as Wills paraphrases him in his review - "the average American had little reason to go to the expense and trouble of acquiring, mastering and maintaining a tool of such doubtful utility as a gun." Here are just a few examples of what I'm talking about: Edward Winslow (1595-1655) was a founder of the Plymouth colony in Massachusetts. He wrote, among other things, "How The Pilgrim Fathers Lived." In this work, referring to a ship which might be friend or foe, he writes: "Whereupon every man, yea boy, that could handle a gun, were ready, with full resolution that, if she were an enemy, we would stand in our just defense, not fearing them." To those in the colony, he advises: "Bring every man a musket or fowling-piece. Let your piece be long in the barrel, and fear not the weight of it, for most of our shooting is from stands." It seems unlikely that these things would be said if guns were scarce.

The area of distribution occupied by the southern crayfishes or Parastacidae is separated by a broad equatorial zone from that of the northern group, unless, as has been asserted, the two come into contact or overlap in Central America. None is found in any part of Africa, though a species occurs in Madagascar. They are absent also from the oriental region of zoologists, but reappear in Australia and New Zealand. Some of the Australian species, such as the “Murray River lobster” (Astacopsis spinifer), are of large size and are used for food. In South America crayfishes are found in southern Brazil, Argentina and Chile. (W. T. CA.) CREATIANISM AND TRADUCIANISM. Traducianism is the doctrine about the origin of the soul which was taught by Tertullian in his De anima—that souls are generated from souls in tb,’ ssme way sod st the ssme time ss bodies from bodies: Peter Lombard’s phrase perhaps shows that even in his time it was’ felt that some union of the two opinions was needed, and Augustine’s toleration pointed in the same direction, for the traducianism he thought possible was one in which God operatur institutas administrando non novas instituendo naturas (Ep. 166. ‘5. if). Modern psychologists teach that while “personality” can be discerned in its “becoming,” nothing is known of its origin. Lotze, however, who may be taken as representing the believers in the immanence of the divine Being, puts forth—but as a “dim conjecture “—something very like creatianism (Microcosmus, bk. iii. chap. v. ad fin.). It is still, as in the days of Augustine, a question whether a more exact division of man into body, soul and spirit may help to throw light on this subject.

Crashaw to Crowe Crashaw, Richard Steps to the Temple (1646), consisting mainly of religious poems somewhat in the style of Herbert; his Weeping of the Magdalen is full of the most extravagant conceits, a fondness for which is, indeed, his besetting sin as a poet. His friend Cowley commemorated him in a beautiful ode. Crawford, Francis Marion The Indian Herald (1879-80). Thereafter he settled in Italy, living chiefly at Sorrento, and becoming a Roman Catholic. His principal historical works are Ave Roma Immortalis The Rulers of the South (reprinted as Sicily, Calabria, and Malta , 1904), and Venetian Gleanings (1905), but his reputation rests mainly on his novels, of which he wrote between 30 and 40, the best known of which are perhaps Mr. Isaacs Dr. Claudius A Roman Singer Saracinesca (1890), generally considered his masterpiece, Don Orsino Pietro Ghisleri (1893), and The Heart of Rome (1903). His one play is Francesca da Rimini . His novels are all interesting, and written in a style of decided distinction. His historical works, though full of information, lack spirit. Creasy, Sir Edward Shepherd
