  • Supplementary Abstract General Abstract: A. P. Watt and Company was the world's first literary agency and was the largest for its first thirty years of operation. Alexander Pollock Watt (1834-1914) began working as a literary agent in 1875 when a friend asked him to negotiate a contract with a London publishing company. By 1881, A. P. Watt had incorporated his business and begun to define the role of the literary agent. A. P.     Freeman Wills Crofts blev født i Dublin i 1879.
    Han arbejdede som ingeniør ved jernbanen i mange år, inden han i 1929 begyndte at skrive detektivromaner.
    Inden sin død i 1957 nåede han at skrive godt 40 romaner.
    I England får Crofts bøger i disse år en eksempelløs renæssance, og hans gode, underholdende detektivromaner er af den type, som man aldrig bliver træt af at læse.

    Freeman Wills Crofts 18791957 Crofts was born in Dublin. His father diedwhile he was still a child, and his mother subsequently remarried.

    Freeman Wills Crofts Crofts was born in Dublin. His father died while he was still a child, and his mother subsequently remarried. He was educated at the Methodist and Campbell Colleges in Belfast. In 1896 he was apprenticed to his uncle, chief engineer on the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. In 1899, he became junior assistant engineer on the Londonderry and Strabane Railway. In the following year he was promoted to district engineer. In 1912, he married Mary Bellas Canning. In 1923 he went back to work for the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway. By this time, he was already a published author. In 1925 the first 'Inspector French' novel was published. This hero appeared in another 29 novels. The success of his novels enabled him to give up his job and become a full-time writer. He and his wife moved from Northern Ireland to Blackheath, Surrey. In the early Fifties, Crofts became seriously ill but continued to work on what turned out to be his final novel. Titles and year of publication:
