The Victoria Cross (in India) Until 1912, the Victoria Cross could not be awarded to Indian members of the Indian Army and was restricted for award only to Europeans (and occasional "Anglo-Indians") in the Indian Army and, with few exceptions, to Europeans in general. While this fact should not diminish the bravery of the 95 (or is it 101?) English officers who won the award for services with Indian Army Regiments before that date. (There is considerable confusion over the numbver of VCs awarded to H.E.I.C./Indian Army officers before 1912 and numbers range from 95 to 101; this is linked to the inevitable confusion of the fairly common practice of "attached" or "seconded" service.) For Indian soldiers, who were not allowed the VC, theolder Indian Order of Merit was the award "of choice" to reward bravery before 1912 when (1837-1911) 42 first class IOMs were alwards (one with a special bar), 130 second class, and 2740 third class. The Royal Warrant of 21 October 1911 (published in the London Gazette of 12 November 1911, p. 9369, but not publically announced in India until the coronantion durbar in Delhi the following month) destroyed the "color bar" for Victoria Cross awards in the Indian Army and allowed Indians to receive this decoration. Accordingly, the first class of the Indian Order of Merit was terminated by Army Order No. 757 of 3 August 1912 (w.e.f. 12 December 1911) and the remaining classes were renumbered.

N ew Zealand servicemen have fought bravely in wars ranging from the Maori Wars between 1850 and the 1870s, through the Boer War in South Africa, both World Wars, Vietnam and other conflicts. The details of New Zealand VCs are included in this site because of the special bond which arose between Australia and New Zealand during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. During this campaign soldiers from both countries formed the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps , from which the initals ANZAC were taken. This collection of letters has since become a word which symbolises the bravery and determination of the men and women of Australia and New Zealand, which endures today. Twenty-one New Zealanders have won the Victoria Cross. Among them was Charles Heaphy, the first non-British serviceman to be awarded the VC in 1861. His award opened the way for other Commonwealth countries to recommend the award for their own heroic servicemen. Another New Zealander, Charles Upham, who is widely regarded in New Zealand as the outstanding soldier of World War 2, earned the Victoria Cross twice.

It was the lesson of the Crimean War that showed the lack of any adequate way to reward brave actions by lower ranking officers and enlisted men.The Decoration is made of bronze, originally from captured Russian cannons in the Crimea, and so its worth lay only in its honor and not its intrinsic value. Always difficult to earn, it has remained to this day one of the most honorable and sought after rewards for military service to country. The names on this list show the recipient's rank when the award was granted and subsequent rank achieved up to 1906 in parenthesis ( ). Recipients alive in 1906 have an asterix * after their name. Regimental unit names are those in use when the particular V.C. was granted, and the date listed is when the act of bravery was performed. Flt. Lt. David S.A. Lord VC. DFC. On the morning of September 19th 1944, Douglas C47 'Dakota' "YS - DM" piloted by Flt. Lt. David S.A.Lord DFC along with others of 271 Squadron RAF Transport Command took off from their base at Down Ampney in Gloustershire to re-supply beleaguered Allied troops at Arnhem in Holland. The Allied Airborne troops had been surrounded and were being pressed into a small area heavily defended by anti-aircraft guns. The air crews were told of this and also of the disastrous circumstances that many were enduring and so to ensure accuracy they were ordered to fly at 900 feet when dropping their containers. While flying at 1,500 feet near Arnhem the starboard wing of Flt Lt Lord's Dakota was hit twice by anti-aircraft fire, as a result the starboard engine was set on fire. He would have been justified to leave the main stream of aircraft and either tried to return to his base in England or even abandon the aircraft altogether, but on learning that all his crew were un-injured and that the dropping zone was just 3 minutes away he decided he would complete his mission as the troops on the ground were in such dire need of supplies. As for Flight Lieutenant D.S.A. Lord DFC. For continuing with his damaged and burning aircraft doing two dropping runs and remaining at the controls thereby giving his crew their best chance a escaping he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He lies buried alongside his crew and the dispatchers in the cemetery at Oosterbeeck.
